YO GUYS! 8)
I trying to remove the lower timing belt cover on my MK3 golf idi 1.9Ltr. How do you guys stop the lower pulley from rotating?
I've tried to put the car in first gear and get some1 to but their foot on the brakes but it still rotates and im not having any luck.
HELP! :shock: PLEASE :)

Of course you can't try it with the belt off as damage will result, but on stuck Rover crank bolts, people will put a wrench on and bump the starter. I don't know if you can get string in because of the prechamber, but that is another way to stop the piston from moving. Maybe you can remove the camshaft and try one of these methods as the valves will be shut then.

wouldn't an impact wrench take that off with ease???

Im assuming you want the fan belt pulley off the crank,dont undo the big 19mm bolt in the middle,the 4 allen key bolts you removed will be enough,the pulley will come off by tapping it with a soft mallet,they will be tight,but it will come off

Follow this link and scroll down almost to the bottom. Libbypapa made a simple tool that will hold the crank with two allens while you get the center bolt on/off. All you need is some flatstock (he used angle but flat would work too), a drill with a metal bit the right size, and a grinder ($20 at Harbor Freight, I love that store!).

EDIT: Oh nevermind, you don't want to remove the center bolt. The center bolt holds the timing belt sprocket to the crankshaft. Unless you are replacing the sprocket, there is no need to remove the big bolt in the middle.

that 19mm holda only the crank pulley,dont touch it unless you want the cambelt pulley to fall off :shock:

And, the center bolt is a stretch bolt... in other words, if you loosen it you have to remove it and install a new one.
You've removed the correct four bolts... like someone else said, some gentle persuasion with a soft mallet is now required. Once you get it apart you'll see how it all fits together.

:) update, success the v-belt pulley removed with the vibration damper....
the main reason im removing the damper is because i was gettin a wobble.. is this normal or does this mean the damper is worn?
from the pics below you can see a few cracks appearing in the rubber, is this the reason for the wobble or could it be crackshaft sprocket that has play in it or is that not possible?
