i am paying 800 dollars a month due to 3 speeding tickets. im in ontario and am willing to see a list of decent insurance company im with state farm now and i got a quote from belair at 628 per month.
thanks
jeff

i was in a similar situation when i was driving a corrado with 6 or 7 tickets. i opened up the yellowpages and started making calls. get as many quotes as you can to better your chances. i'm now with CAA because i get a discount due to being a member and having home insurance with them. good luck.
(you asked when i'm getting a giles pump.. maybe never.. i have 1 ticket on record now since i've been driving a stock TD on the road the past 3 years or so.) slow down! or, see you at shannonville.

Holy crap, $9,600 a year for insurance  I feel for you.

Try the Co-operators, mine was way more with "the Personal" someone that claims to be a military friend lol! The co-operators has been great. My wife put the car in the ditch and then our rates went down after they did a reassessment...
Now I'm paying $177/month for my 99 Golf TDI for my wife and myself (I'm 22 and she's 21 so it hurts). She's also only had her full license for 3 years now so that jacks it up too :(
When I was single in CFB Borden (clean record) driving a 1990 dodge effing shadow I was paying $400/month with the Personal...they suck. That was in 2002! That was over 1/3 of my cleared pay too lol...bastards.
-
LOVIN THE TRICYCLE AND TRAILER! Im startin to get better quotes i was worrying this was going to impede or stop all my projects
-
Could you post your finds? I'm paying $200 a month and would love something lower. I have 1 light infraction ticket
-
insurance companies will try to find any way to increase your insurance rate... i'm with belair and simply because my car is diesel my rate went up another $5 or so...
with 3 tickets they put you at high risk driver??? i know some people who have been in more than 3 accidents paying around $650?? it also depends on where you live and what coverage you want... if i were you i'd drive the ***tiest car and just get liability on it. that way u lessen the chance for speeding tickets too :)
-
Smilth & Wesson has a nice little poicy....
-
My friend found some insurance hotline or some *** on the internet and i type in all my info and a bunch of people give me quotes that are relativly near my house. I got a quote for 365 a month :D belair quoted me 628 :( All i have right now is liabilty on my passat. In the summer im going to try to get my dad to register my rabbit in his name and put classic insurance on it. insurance sucks but everyone needs it.
-
yea insurance is a big scam though... i'd say its generally more females getting into accidents than males... and if its a male, hes obviously some idiot kid who likes to drive fast, but is too incompetent to know when/where. Or an old person...
your best bet is to just get a winter beater that you can afford to smash in the winter. gm cars are the best for this!!!
all it takes is one retard to make a stupid move and completely ruin your ***!!!
-
I went from a 94 Ford Taurus Wagon to a 86 Golf 4DR Diesel and my insurance went up. As far as I can tell from the vehicles I have owned, insurance costs are inversely proportional to the quantity of said vehicle in your local wrecking yards. :) I'm paying 360 every 6 months on my Golf with the Co-operators. I tried shopping around years ago and almost every one else was double or more what I was paying with them, so I don't even bother comparing prices any more. I'm 40 and married, so that makes a difference although my record isn't squeaky clean.

classic insurance covers a limited amount of milage the last time i called around about it. it also doesn't allow you to legally drive the car unless its to a show or parade, etc. in addition, when you need the insurance because there has been an accident, you won't be covered because you are not your dad. many of these policies (last i checked) only cover the driver on the policy. been down this road as well. sounds like you've got some better quotes. in the 300s isnt too bad with tickets. at least 1 must be a major eh?
-
Glad you found some better possibilities.
A local broker put me through Kingsway a few yrs ago when I was 'high risk' due to too many tickets. I was 34 at the time though, mine went up to ~$450/mo.
Had been with SF, I didn't get inflated rates, they just sent me a letter that basically said 'Regarding your policy, phuck you'...and cancelled my coverage. I've had one claim from hitting a deer, and numerous speeding tickets.
Then to add another insult, my SF house insurance kept going up, so I called to ask why. I get a revised lowered policy with some lame excuse 'Oh your local fire station has a new pumper truck'.
Apparently a new fire truck can better protect my property from fire, theft, act of God, and liability...
Uh huh. If I hadn't ***ed, my rates woulda continued through the roof.
I got a policy through Allstate (another fiasco I won't bother with here) and didn't bother to tell SF. Two weeks later they call to remind me my policy expired.
I said 'Yep.'
Girl says oh ok so you have made other arrangements then?
I said 'Yep.'
Ok, thanks, good-bye.
No effort to re-quote, get me back, inquire if/why I was dissatisfied, nothing. Couldn't have cared less for my business.
Been ticket free for 4yrs now, want to get TD or PC quotes when I have a moment.
Back down to just over $100/mo but I'm 38 & live in the sticks
Went with local mutual house insurance co, still aggrevating but not near like SF or Allstate.
Tell State Farm to take a flying leap and don't EVER go back.
-
never had an accident claim.... i have had 3 tickets the firs was 23 over the next 10 over and the next was 20 over.... dam. no accidents i never killed anyone I have never lit my insurance brokers house on fire or anything real crazy. The only crazy people are the insurance brokers i just cant see how they sleep at night.
Jeff

...i just cant see how they sleep at night.
Very well actually. Be it at home, on their yacht, in the summer house, Swiss ski chalet, Venice apartment...etc
In all fairness by 'numerous' I meant I did have 6 or 8 tickets on my licence when I got cancelled, the last one for 49 over.
But after 15+ years with them with one claim, to have them cancel, really cheesed me. I can understand inflated rates for 'risk' (to some degree) but c'mon...
And I bet we can all think of someone that's had a past DUI or other serious infraction too, that's now driving and paying less than $600+ per month...explain that to me :x
-
insurance companies are businesses. a typical business goal is profit, high profit if they can get away with it. taking risky drivers is a risk they don't want, unless compensated in a manner that will still allow them to be profitable. only advice i have is get as many quotes as you can and drive like your granny until you can afford to take some more risks with your driving record. or

-
...drive like your granny...
Mine went through the back wall of her garage two years ago :!:
-
DON'T CLAIM IT!
-
I think they want to get rid of me because im high risk but my family just put through a monster claim for the garage fire and they paid out so i think they have seen enough of me or something. Im never late on my payments or anything... The main thing is im 20
-
well they see 20 year old males as high risk right off the bat. because there's more young males on the road than females, the numbers aren't fair. true less women get into accidents than men, but there are also less women on the road than men!!! the law of probability would state that since there are more men on the road, more men will get into accidents.
i've heard of more women doing stupid things than men... with men its always high speed and possibly alcohol or drugs... with women its always doing something idiotic.
plus the fact that there are increasing numbers of people on the road today without insurance... not cool! it basically means that even if its not your fault, your insurance company will dock you for it as a claim... i still don't like the fact that in a parking lot its 50/50 fault...

Yeah I was getting the shaft big time up till my last birthday (when you hit 21 they assume that the life preservation mechanism kicks in or something) then they lowered the rates by ~30%
I found I always got a better deal by going into the place I wanted coverage from, look like a mature person (maybe you can bring an infant with you and say it is your sister who you are babysitting for?), then tell them a bit about your life :) Seriously, it seems to help them find ways to give you a a discount etc...
-

NICE. I'm turning 21 in 3 days :D Now there's a birthday present.
-
Sweet be sure to let them know that, for me they ended up giving me a fat rebate check at the end of the year instead of just adjusting it...don't ask me why since I'd think it would be easier to readjust.
-
it doesnt help that i haver been so busy that i havnt got my G yet... I have to wait till monday now to get a hold of anyone for insurance its like they work partime no matter what. LAZY BASTARDS!
-
Man. Reading this thread makes me feel much, much better about paying my $120/month car insurance as a "medium-high" risk driver. No tickets in the past three years, in a five door station wagon (Quantum Syncro), and 22. When I'm 24 I drop into a more realistic category, "Moderate-low" risk given my driving record. Would be just "low" but I have a CDL, and they always stick you a little harder when you're qualified to drive big vehicles (Anything up to and over 26k pounds, as long as it's not truck-and-trailer :D).
Liability and collision, state mandated minimums. Uninsured motorist coverage, too.
-
so the more driving experience and knowledge of what other drivers require as far as space around them etc, they charge you more?
-
I think in ontario, 25 yrs is the magic number.
Hey, why don't you tell them that you're running almost 30 pounds of boost, and enjoy doing really big burnouts. Then maybe, when looking back, $800/month will seem cheap!
-
It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me either. I can't complain about what I'm paying ($136 per month for basic coverage on 2 Jettas) but I'm hardly paying any less than my brother-in-law is for full coverage on his 2002 Caravan and I have a clean driving record. I had been paying between $150 and $200 per month for my 85 Coupe only before I switched over to Cooperators. Apparently in the other company's books there was no such thing as a 1985 2 door Diesel Jetta and they considered it a "modified" vehicle but it never dropped when I switched over to my old Rabbit for the winters. I don't buy it but what can you do?
-

We have video proof!
-
I KNEW that damn video would surface and bite me right in the arse.....

Link to warning story for posting videos of yourself doing things the cops don't like on the internet. Happened in Norway, don't know if it could or would happen here.

I think they would be able to do something about that if they caught the video. "Canada's Worst Driver" on The Discovery Channel had a driver that was young, had a bad attitude and was speeding like crazy. So on one episode they forwarded a video of him speeding along with his licence plate number to the police department in his area. They actually even showed his ontario plate on tv  Never know...
To cut down on insurance costs you could try paying yearly. I pay $1400 a year for my '90 TD (with 450,000km :D) and I'm only 19. Then again I have liability but no coverage for myself. No point. I'm a safe enough driver that I'm not worried about getting in an accident. If I do damage my car however, I would simply pay that with my own money. At the price that insurance charges you for coverage, most likely, not paying for coverage on my car has already paid for the price of a future accident.
By the way, I've never been in an accident or had a speeding ticket. (radar detectors are investments!)
-Matt

are radar detectors legal in bc?
-
are radar detectors legal in bc?
Yes. However, I know they aren't in Alberta though. Not sure about Ontario. But radar jammers, which emit a signal to fool radar guns, are illegal North America wide.
-
for those single males in the USA, most insurance companies actually provide coverage on two vehicles for a lower cost than insurance on one. buy a beater, license and insure it along with your daily driver then just park it and you will probably pay less than if you just insure your daily driver.
-
I've moved from Upstate New York USA to Sonora Mexico. Cost me $121 a year to insure my 99 Passat 1.8T Wagon. Will be interesting to see what I will pay for my 83 Rabbit TD when I bring it down this summer.
Of course I'm in my thirties. I haven't had a ticket for 19 years.
-
so the more driving experience and knowledge of what other drivers require as far as space around them etc, they charge you more?
Yeah, I don't really understand it either. I guess they figure they can stick you for more because if you hold a CDL you must be making the big money driving, and then stick you again for CYA insurance for when you total some idiot's car when they cut out in front of you and slam on the brakes. Happens to me and my bus on a near-daily basis.
-
i got everything settled im now paying 347 a month :D instead of 798 :D
-
nice work. :P
