can anyone tell me if there are any differences between a GTD SB head and a "normal" turbo diesel head?
I know you didn't actually get the GTD engine over the pond, but alot of you guys seem really knowledgable on lots of euro parts, so I figure its worth an ask...
also if anyone in the UK has a GTD head for sale, or a normal turbo head if they are no different, I may well be interested :D
thanks

Itīs a same head. Why donīt you buy a new head?
-
has the GTD threw a shoe then mate, whats up with the head?

There's 3 GTDs on fleabay at the moment, one of which might go for about Ģ100. Not ideal to get a whole car I suppose, but if you need bits urgently & have the space & time...
The bits usually crop up under 'breaking' every week or so though.
Good luck,
Tom

New head?..Where?

From here (http://cgi.ebay.de/Zylinderkopf-VW-Transporter-Bus-T-3-1-6-D-TD-CS-JX-NEU_W0QQitemZ290084317423QQihZ019QQcategoryZ61369QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) for example. New heads are normal replacement parts
-
well a new head would be lovely, but unfortunately I'm not made of money!
bert: yeah it threw all its toys out the pram the other day and snapped the cambelt! so thats a couple of bent valves, several damaged tappets and a cam with +-2.5 degrees wobble, which although not terminal means I wouldn't mind it if another came up. When one of the tappets was mashed its gouged its register a fair bit, it may be fixable, but I'm just weighing up all the options....
it also means now could be the time to go for a 1.9 ??
who knows I'll see what the ebay and breakers yard gods have to say on the matter...
-
1.9

I thought this place would be good as any to ask...
What's the difference between the NA 1.6 heads and the 1.6TD heads?
-
the head is made of a stronger heat resistant alloy, and the exhaust valves are more durable and can take extra heat. at least thats what VAG says...

Okay, I thought so but wasn't sure
I have an extra 1.6 NA engine beside my garage and was wondering if it was worth sending the head out for some work to put on my TD. I guess not then.
I should have expected as much, the typical differences from a FI head to a NA head.

aye thanks mate, I saw that one, luckily I managed to find a whole replacement 1.6 TD with what appears to be a nearly new head for Ģ150 :D , so I'm just going to chuck that in.

Nice one mate,so i will se it at the meet then

rumor has it... if it is a hyd head, it is ok to use for TD or NA, and is of the same alloy.
the prechambers and valves had different materials pre '86

i think that rumour is true... i just checked ETKA, and ME MF RA SB all have the same head :P valves and camshaft included.
this is great info because i just bought a parts car with a nice rebuilt head... ohhh yea!!!

Okay, so I gotta check the engine code... it will be stamped under the front coolant flange on the block, correct?
I know that on the back there is the displacement casting, but is there any other way to tell WHEN the head was made.... e.g. after 86?
