WTF is up with diesel Rabbit odometers? :o
I have an 81 Caddy with 107K and an 86 Golf with 881K??? on non-functioning odometers. The speedos work, but not the odometers. And most of the older Rabbits, Jettas etc, on e-bay say something like "mileage not accurate." :(
I checked ebay and found 4 instrument clusters in the last week. 2 said the odos did NOT work, 1 said the odo DID work, and I bought the 4th one because he said it worked, but didn't specifically mention the odometer. Of course it does NOT work. :x
Is there a common failure and/or repair I could do to get these odometers working. I've been driving for 3 weeks on my first tank in the caddy, but have no idea how far I've gone, or what mileage I've been getting. Thanx for your help.

I found several helpful posts on the http://www.vwdieselparts.com/ forum. :)
Man, there are a lot of VW diesel forums out there! I'm still finding them!
I'll let you know how the repair goes.

usually its a gear on the trip counter that gets jammed and stops the entire odo.

Yeh... just take out the metal pin that is going thru the gear that is cracked, and drill out the gear a little bit.
Using some epoxy, put it back together.... with the gap you created with the drill being enough to glue it on the pin.
I tried it once without doing the drilling, and I had to do it again.

Anyone have a source of a replacement brass gear to replace the fragile plastic one that came OEM in these odometers?
-
There was somewhere online detailed instructions (with cool photos and stuff  ) on how to do this; I used to have the site bookmarked but alas, can't find it any more! Does anyone know to what I am referring??
I really need to do this fix this Winter while my Rabbit is asleep!

Scully is this the link you were thinking of?

Thank Roger for this extremely informative site ...a lot more info then just odometers. Great resource.
