I'm looking for a no ac alternator setup for my 1.6td.
IIRC you folks up north had the option of a 1.9 without air, and with serpentine alternator setup.. is that correct? Even if I'm wrong, just a v belt setup would be great too..
Let me know what's out there..

I think I have what you need...PM me

I have this in my garage, it's a mystery piece but someoen told me it's for A jetta with PS but no AC
Can anyone confirm?

if you pull of a part number, someone with ekta can confirm.
-
that looks like a mk2 w/air bracket to me...
-
I have that same piece in my trunk, mk2, non-air, PS
-
hmm... anybody got a pic of one installed?
-
I'll take some next time I am at my garage if I remember

I don't know what your 1.6 is in. No clue from your post or in your sig.
...but Add's alternator bracket is off an A2. it will work for either an AC or non AC setup.
Each setup uses a different alternator. Non-AC being the 65 amp with mounting holes opposite each other.
AC alternator is 90 amp and has holes at about 60 degrees.
I used this bracket, an adjuster bracket from a digi2 and an alternator pully from...??? a '93 Ford pickup??? to put the 90 amp alternator on a non-AC setup.
It's all documented in my post on vwdieselparts.com.

90 amp alternator
should get you there.

sorry bout that.. it's in a mk2.
I have a couple of what I thought were "w / air brackets.."
I am ashamed to admit I had no idea they only had one bracket for air / non air. Now I'm curious what the factory adjuster bracket looks like.. :)

There are a few serp options if you want...
Another (which I have on the m-TDI setup) is using a 1z/AHU crank pulley, or a AAZ serp crank pulley with a 8v 2.0 ABA non/AC serp water pump pulley (can be ordered online, with the correct serp belt for less than 50.00), and a 2.0 alternator on either a 1z/AHU or even possibly the ABA accessory bracket. This gives you the option of the 90 amp serp alternator or the 120 serp alternator as well. Only differece between the 1z/AHU and ABA gasser 2.0 accessory brackets is that the ABA bracket lacks the extra "ear" that the injection pump bracket attaches too on the front of the motor...no biggy if your 1.6 :)
Just a thought...

This is what your looking for.

it can be done for far cheaper than the ABF setup using the ABA stuff...just not as "clean" since the ABA bracket would still have the A/C compressor mounting ears on it, etc...
Serp is SOOOOO nice though...

doesn't ABA alt bracket hit the pump?
-
No, I don't believe it will... its very similar to the 1z/AHU bracket with the exception that it lacks the extra "ear" that comes up off the bracket and then allows you to bolt the accessory bracket to the injection pump mounting bracket on the 1z/AHU configuration.

Only mod I made really to mine which was the 1z/AHU style unit was that I grinded away and sanded a portion that was there from the casting marks so that I could easily remove the pump timing set pin from my cummins 4bt pump base that I used on my setup. Without its removal, it'd hit the bracket and involved taking the whole bracket off or the pump to remove the bolt...

I have a serp setup that I got off of a 1.9td I swapped. No air. It's just sitting in the back of my trunk if anyone is interested. I'm missing a few of the pulleys I think but I'd imagine they are the same as the other serp setups.
*spoken for*
here are pictures of it as well as a bracket from a non-AC non-PS car.

I was going to take pictures of an installed serp setup on a 1.9 but I wasn't really up to the task tonight

It's the golf on the right, sorry for the miserable pictures

I just went through all this on my 1.6TD. Maybe this will help a bit.
First, here's a pic of the A/C bracket that was on my 1.6TD with A/C (in my caddy). It's the one on the right. The one on the left is for a Quantum.
(http://www.hostdub.com/albums/veeman_album07/brackets_1.jpg) (http://www.hostdub.com/veeman_album07:brackets_1)
In this setup, the alternator is on top, in front of the engine above the compressor which sits in it's own adjustment bracket down by the water pump. I hated it... my a/c never worked, it was heavy and I constantly had tensioning problems with the belt. Removing the bracket and getting at some of the recessed bolts was an "exercise" in patience to say the least.
I then got a hold of an entire non-a/c setup from a 1.6 NA engine (mk1). It adapted perfectly to my 1.6TD. There are three parts to it not including the pulleys:
- bracket that goes against the water pump (later cast one in this pic, although some were stamped / sheet metal that apparently broke often)
(http://www.hostdub.com/albums/veeman_album07/non_ac_bracket_005.jpg) (http://www.hostdub.com/veeman_album07:non_ac_bracket_005)
- Alternator adjustment arm (sits near the bottom of the engine rather than on top like the a/c setup)
- Timing belt cover support arm.
(http://www.hostdub.com/albums/veeman_album07/non_ac_bracket_004_side.jpg) (http://www.hostdub.com/veeman_album07:non_ac_bracket_004_side)
The pulleys are slightly different to account for the offset of the alt pulley and of course, the alternator is different as well. I think the main mounting ear is shaped differently than the a/c unit since it sits in the place where the a/c compressor would be.
When I bought my new non-a/c alt, I made sure it had the "W" terminal for the tach conversion. I think a rebuilt unit cost me around $90 or so.
I've been running the non-ac setup for 5 months now and I haven't had to even touch the alternator adjustment. This is a night and day improvement over the a/c setup which I fiddled with every few weeks.
Hope that helps you in your search... FYI, I got my non-ac setup from a friend on the west coast where something like that is relatively more common than out here in Ohio.
