Title: engine noise
Post by: akl on November 20, 2004, 04:31:47 pm
I drive a 1.9TD and I'm experiencing a very loud rattle at 2900 rpm. It seems to be coming from the valve train area but I could be wrong. I've recently had the motor apart and everything appeared to be normal. Anyone heard of this before?

Did it make the noise before you had it apart?

yes, no change in the noise from before to after.

Is your noise present at any other engine speed? If not it seems like resonance. My AAZ had a very bad exhaust resonance at 2800rpm. Get a helper to place their foot on the tailpipe while you rev the engine to the noisy rpm, if the noise goes away you have found the problem. I added a longer flex joint at the downpipe to fix mine. Also get under the car and tap on the catalytic converter with a rubber hammer and listen for rattles. The cat has been known to come apart inside. I don't know what else could vibrate at such a specific RPM.

Thanks for the prompt reply. The noise starts specifically at that rpm, is bad for about 400 rpm then slowly tapers off. It sounds to me more like a mechanical vibration but I will definately check out the exhaust. Thanks

I have an 87 vw golf 1.8 automatic and it always makes a weird noise at about 1800-2000 rpm.  It goes away when the engine rpm is not in that range.  I never liked automatic anyway (except for the laziness) so i just left it and never gave me any problems.  I now drive a 1.6L TD :D and the golf still runs (even though I drove the piss out of it!!!)
