Title: AAZ Belt Tensioner

My belt tensioner arm is constantly flapping back and forth.  The pulley seems fine, so I tried to replace  my old tensioner with a tensioner from the dealer- and it didn't line up properly.  The hole where the arm attaches to the pulley is offset (relative to the old tensioner) so that when I install it, I can't pull the arm back enough to get the belt on.  When I install it, the pulley is resting on the alternator pulley (much further back than where the old one sat).

When I bought the part, I gave the dealer the part # on the old one, and he said that they changed the # slightly.

Anyone have the part #'s for both a '93 and '97 AAZ accessory belt tensioner?  Are they the same?

The AC and Non-AC cars use different tensioner arms, make sure you have the right one. The offset is different, as you found out. The flopping tensioner problem is best solved by using an alternator pulley with a one way clutch from the TDI. Also make sure your harmonic balancer is straight, most aren't and they tend to get worse with age.

When I changed my 94 over from AC to non AC I did not have a problem with the tensioner, it was the same as the one on my non AC 93.

I had a different style tensioner arm kicking around, I assumed it was from a non AC diesel car because I don't keep no gasser parts, someone must have planted it there to mess with me... :D

 A quick check in ETKA shows all the diesels using 028 903 308G and the gasser uses 028 903 308C, they must have sold you a gasser arm, and that must be what I have in my junk box...
