Title: K14 spool-up
Post by: aidan on January 21, 2007, 08:10:36 am
How soon can these be made to spool with the fuelling mods as noted in the 'make my 1.9TD faster' thread?

It seems to do pretty much nothing on my standard GTD until around 2500rpm at the moment. My old AHU got going around 1500rpm, slightly earlier with a tuning box (and plenty of smoke).

I'm guessing 1500rpm will be too much to ask, so i'm thinking either a GT15 or VNT17 from a PD130 with a WG actuator if one comes along cheap enough

hi,

if it starts to spool up at 2500 you have an T3 or K24 or something is wrong with your setup.

the K14 normaly spools up around 2000rpm on an 1,6l.

always remember: too high boost unter 2000rpm may kill your rod-bearings and gearbox, the VNT-TDIs have special (expensive) bearings to handle it.

It starts to whistle a bit around 2000rpm but the pull seems to begin about 2500ish. it seems to match the book figure of 114lbft
from 2400-2900(think thats right)

Its a November '91 SB, so I though they all had the K14? I can't quite see the ID plate but its a small turbo.
Gearbox isn't so much a problem as I have a tdi 02a in the garage along with a VR6 clutch and dieselgeek shortshift, just need the flywheel, driveshafts, cable clutch converter and cable change mechanism. Current gearbox already has the dreaded 2nd gear crunch.

Bert, what sort of rpm does the T3 start spinning up? I want to get similar pull from as close to idle as possible as I do from my VR6.

My daily driver is a Jetta TD 1991 thats got a garrett T2 on it watercooled, and the engine is also an SB,that spools up around 2200rpm,the mk1 is superb but it winds up about 2400 rpm but is way quicker than the jetta, its hard to describe how well it really pulls,i wasnt expecting that performance, the jetta has an intercooler and the mk1 dont, the mk3 i cut up for the engine was nippy but it only had the tiny K03 on it and a cat,and power steering which are all removed,it also never had EGR on it so im chuffed.
The main help is the freeflow exhaust i have used on it,2.5 inch with no middle silencer    it sounds nice,i have still got to set the pump to 1.0mm plunger travel as it misses a bit when cold when its set to the book 0.8mm,Giles on here said go to 1.0 so thats good enough for me
Im going to tax it in a few months and take it to a mates performance center for a dyno check.

that sounds just like a K24... mine does the same thing.  i hear the whistle of the turbo around 2000 but it does not produce 10 psi unti i go above, or give it a bit more.

Ok, just went out for a bit of an extended test, just did the oil/filter and coolant, I can hear it start to whistle about 1700 maybe if i floor it in 3rd or 2nd around 1500ish (these motors haven't got enough torque to slip the clutch doing this, right?) and it will pull from maybe 2200. Anyway, I won't go on asking you lads what turbo I have, I should stop being lazy and pull the intake hoses off to see for myself.

Say I now have pull from 2200, what will the extra fuelling bring that down to? Could it start to pull at 1700ish?

Bert, if you cut up a mk3 for the engine for the mk1, then its a 1.9? You never know, I may see it around, I live in Redditch and work up in Streetly so pass through Birmingham often
