Go with 2.5 inch from the turbo back no mufflers!!! Possibly one of the best options out there...if you want it very very quiet throw a muffler on it!!

Here is a 3" exhaust with no mufflers so you can get an idea of how it will sound

did '97 aaz's have cats on the exhaust??? that would suck... i would imagine it getting clogged in no time

wonder if the emissions check places would let you go without it hehe

Before buying anything online talk to local shops. My friend had a complete 2.5" aluminized exhaust custom made and installed for $300 CAD

I had 2 1/4" stainless done cat back in St Thomas within the past year for  ~$200 on my 97 TDI. Stock is metric, between 2 and 2 1/4" IIRC.
I eliminated both mufflers, flows nice & free. Very quiet, barely perceptible turbo whistle.

If you're local & want the shop name, PM me.

will most aftermarket exhausts fit my car?
what are the differences between a diesel exhaust and a gas one?

I'm not sure about mk3s but on mk1 and mk2s the difference is where the exhaust meets the downpipe. There might be a difference in the mufflers, but I don't know

1994 AAz engines in the uk have a cat,i took mine off to put the engine into a mk1 golf, upon looking through the cat,the only clear bit was the middle 1 inch diameter, the rest was sooted up    it was binned

the guys here in Ontario are pretty strict... like i said i had a bit of an oil leak and they wouldn't pass it drive clean.  the oil leak was little more than a drip...  however we used to have an older golf WITHOUT a cat that had LESS emissions than our van WITH a cat....

i have to go for my emissions test in may... quick visual check and off i go with my wallet being $36 lighter....

In Ontario, as with every other place, it all depends on who you know.  Where I take mine to get etested, the guy walked out, walked around the back, and said yeah its a golf, and it sounds like a diesel, and I got my certificate :D

When I got mine done...the guy got into the car (in the parking lot) started it up....leaned out to look at the back of the car...reved it a few times...and signed the paper!!! hahahaha

yea... when i tell people thats all they do for diesels... people want one!  but then again diesels arent for everyone.  most women/men just like to get in and drive... and drive hard!!!

i've got one buddy who will jump into his honda at work... won't even let it idle a minute at -10C and just zoom off... sure his car heats up but i wonder what kind of damage he's doing to his motor...  of course 5w20 oil flows excellent in the cold weather though!

I just got my diesel e-tested last night after work....they didnt even look under the car....I would think that if you go to a "good" place they might actually look under the car!!!

Actually, that's exactly what you are supposed to do. Just drive gently until it's up to temp. For a gasser, letting it sit there & idle just ruins your cats cos it runs rich for longer and doesn't warm up as fast.
