Title: Desiel fuel pricing??????????
Post by: Hammy on November 08, 2004, 05:51:06 pm
Anyone here capable of making me understand the current price(in Ontario, anyways) of desiel fuel, and why it costs more than gasoline?!! I just can't understand it? Maybe it's time to stop traffic on the highway again! Like the truckers did a few years back. Just to show the government our concern, so to speak!

Just my opinion anyway, what do you all think?

P.S. prices up here are around $0.83-$0.86/L

Moonstone

The price of diesel is higher than gasoline right now because the refineries are producing home heating fuel for the winter season. I believe home heating fuel is just regular diesel fuel which is not taxed as much as fuel for transportation, but I'm not positive on that one. Plus there's the whole supply and demand thing to factor in as well. As mentioned, if you want to stop fattening up the oil companies wallets, make your own bio-diesel at home. I plan on trying to make my own bio-diesel soon but I'm having a hard time finding pure methanol and lye. By the way, I paid 77.9 yesterday at a Sunoco in Mississauga.

Take care.

Peter

diesel has been at least 5 cents more than gas here solid for about 2 wks now... and on and off before that.

i filled at a truck stop about 2 wks ago... cost me more than i've ever paid to fill the tank but i still have about 3/8 of it left!

Equivalent of 1.10 US$ per litre last fillup... of course fuel taxes are way higher here.

Petrol is up around the 1.50-1.60 mark though, so I'm still kinda smiling. I'm glad my other car runs on ~55 cent LPG though.

Veggie oil is around 60-75 cents depending where you get it. I am considering mixing some of this cheap stuff with diesel in the tank but it's probably not the right season to start messing with that.

Can anyone give me some insight on making my own fuel. I'd be curious if I would need, or be expected to get some sort of permit(s) to be able to make veggie fuel?

I absolutely agree, that it should be nobody elses business but mine. But, my nieghbors might be inquiring when I start storing 45 gallon drums in my back yard, and doing a jerry can jockey marathon in my driveway. I need to do research on whats involved in making the fuel first.

 Thanks for the info. anyways.

Does anyone know of a place in the GTA where I can buy small amounts  of methanol and lye, enough to make 10 liters or so of bio-diesel? I've read on some U.S. sites that you can get a certain gas-line anti-freeze which is nearly pure methanol and a drain cleaner made from lye, but I haven't seen them here. If anyone knows where to get these things it would be most appreciated.

Maybe you were being told about Methyl Hydrate.  You can buy it by the jug at truck shops but I'm not sure of it's application in this case.

The stuff you get at truck stops is used in the air system alcohol evaporator on heavy trucks. It prevents the air brake system from freezing. I'm pretty sure it is 99% methanol.

In Central Florida is anywhere between 2.29 and 2.36 a gallon.  Might be time to switch to a bio fuel, considering that in January there will be a substantial federal tax break to those who sell or blend the bio stuff.  My $.02

wow....
diesel here is like 64.9 cents a liter compaired to 76.9 for regular :D
but its goin up slowly...it used to be about 20 cents less then gas. the sad part is thats still too expensive for the amount of driving i do and thefact i dont have a job right now. i want to try making biodiesel, just like a litre to see how the process works but im too scared to be using methanol after hearing it can kill you by just touching your skin.

It's the wrong time of the year for you to be thinking about biodesiel.

Good luck with the job hunt, Steve

Haven't been on here much lately as my new project is a '92 Dodge Cummins 350 dually. I've owned imports all my life and this thing is quite a change, it's freaking HUGE  :!:  :!:  :!:
Great engine though, although the jury is still out on the truck
Didn't pay much for it, but it needs a bit of work.  It came with almost no fuel in it, and the "Low Fuel" light was on. I added 5 gals. from a jerry can and the light went out, but the gauge didn't move, so I thought that would be one more thing to fix. When I took it to the city for the first time I decided to fill it up with "cheap" diesel at $2.34/gal. It took $60.00 to fill it    And now the gauge shows full, I guess 5 gallons wasn't enough to get the float off the peg

I only just caught this tread.
Consider yourself lucky as here(Winnipeg, Mb.) you can`t legally purchase more than 20 litres of meth and store it within city limits.
Some beauracratic microbe found out that the stuff COULD catch fire and pushed a law through the city council to ban large amounts not used for commercial purposes within the city.
Ah the beuracratic mentality,....
