Title: a batch o' fresh diesel engines
Post by: Dr. Diesel on November 05, 2004, 10:19:08 pm
I'm investigating the feasibility of producing a batch of affordable, fully overhauled td engines. I have access to all the good machinery required for quality engine rebuilding. Pricing is still being determined, (exchange your core engine!) but I'm hoping for somwhere around $1500-1800 Canadian ($1000-1500 U.S.) for a 1.6td longblock  (head/bottom end assembled). This will include full condition inspection, resurfacing as required, new pistons, rings, bearings, reconditioned rods, new hydraulic lifters, valves/seats/guides as required.  1.9L's will be available too. I can probably sell just the block or head as well. Naturally, high performance options from mild to buckwild will be available on request at extra cost. The main point, however, is to provide affordable, fresh engines to save all those otherwise nice cars that are getting scrapped or parted because their engines are junk. Just imagine, a clean, powerful, start-in-the-cold engine sitting under the hood. No more fiddle-frakkin around with worn out old junk. I also have good connections for gaskets, parts, injection pump overhaul (and mods!) and turbo rebuilds to support your project.

Help me decide the feasibility and answer this pole.
Thanks!

I was wondering if a factory somewhere around the world was still producing brand new TD's. 1.6 or 1.9's.

I think I have a link for a reseller in the states...

i'm pretty sure 1.9l idi industrial engines are still being produced.

Holy!! That dude wants almost $5000 U.S. for a complete engine!!!

I paid $1200 US for a full rebuild service on a 1.6lTD core several years ago... including new pistons n' other stuff.  That's also about what I'd expect the current going rate to be at current prof. rebuilders as well (note: this was just a generic stock-type rebuild - no balancing, no boring plate)

As posted in the poortex, if you were gonna do this with 1.9's, and mine ever failed...we'd be talking!

does this mean you are thinking of becoming a "machine shop monkey"? :D

No! i'm going to be a hunter of machine shop monkies! i'm going to break them! I'm their nemesis! I will build each and every engine as though it was my own, with well deserved tender loving care!
I... Will... Produce... QUALITY!!!!

*"EEEEK! The 'Q' word!!" scream the monkies, covering their ears in pain as they shrivel up and die.*
Title: Engine Rebuilds

Dr. Diesel,

Just trolling through old posts and ran across your poll for rebuilding a batch O' diesels. Was this engine rebuild concept stillborn, or have you been providing this service? I 'm searching for someone to completely go through my mystery hydraulic 1.6 TD for power and longevity. Also, if I send an engine from the U.S. to Camada and back again, what kind of tariffs would I incur?

Thanks, Derek

not enough interest to fire up the project. I suppose I still could if there were. The price of freight etc would probably make it worthwhile to find a good shop local to you though.

thats what I dont get... people are ready to shell out mega cash for new cars, but not for workmanship.  totally rebuilt 1.6TD is well worth $2000.
After rebuilding mine, I believe the total price will be around that.  I did however buy some donor parts cars :)

a local machine shop is charging me approx 300-400 for the boring/honing magnafluxing, hot tank, crank machining, etc.  all the goodies.  rebuilding the head won't be too much more either.  now the actual parts will be around 800 bucks.  I'm still considering getting the pistons coated (not ceramic, but a heat reflective coating)  at around $40 per piston it seems steep, but the technology is proven in racing!
