I bought a 82 rabbit that smokes.
its fuel or oil smoke,its pretty heavy,can not smell antifreeze.does not overheat.
took the injectors out and compression was 375+ on every one.
put used injectors in and set valves.started up and still smokes to excess.
runs smooth and tacks up fast....
did anyone ever come across this?
maybe the pump?
or valve seals?
the story I got was that the guy who owned it tried to start this with bad glow plugs......
when it started it was smoking.(it has a block heater,and said he did not use starting fluid)...
thought I would run this across to you all before I change the pump.

what colour is the smoke??? if its black than it is fuel....if its blue smoke than that is oil burning!!!!
colour will tell a lot!!!!

Yea man you have good compression,  def  IP,   or Fuel pin on the front of the pump, but yes check the  help section

it is a bluish smoke.the injectors I had from another engine had not much miles since rebuild.
pump timing is right on also.
but it was strange.....
now that I think about it,the pump was (fuel shut off was disconected)flipping some fuel out of the nozzle ports on the pump while taking the compression test..

dirty injectors maybe. injector could be leaking down into the cyl. sounds like the engine is quite tired. Its most likely the cylinder head needs rebuilt but check blow by and maybe do a cylinder leak down test.

this has 166K miles on it.
Am told it never had the head off also.
no smoke from blowby,had top hose and air box off when running.
also no oil in the air box?
seems like maybe valve guide seals.
maybe the oil to thin?
I don't think two different sets of injectors would do the same thing(smoke).

if the engine was sitting a while without running the valve seals can dry up and crak and leak oil on to the gide which would go down into the intake port. I just thought of this it could be your turbo leaking oil check how much play it has.

if you're getting no blowby, then its quite possibly the rings.  the ring gap is probably pretty big by now, and letting just enough oil seep through to create the blue haze out the exhaust.

usually once warm they idle very well.  its only under high stress/boost that the motor burns the oil.  (extreme heat & pressures)

black smoke out the tailpipe is also a sign of possible oil burning as well.  funny that rotella t doesn't burn like other conventional oils do though... only other oils that can do that are synthetics.

this morning went out there and pull the cold start and fired on the touch of the key and no smoke????
pushed it in and OH NO SMOKE....
timing is right on the marks..

46 degrees.
I will have to advance the pump,and try that...
