Don't know if this has been posted before, it's more than you ever wanted to know about The 4-and 5-Cylinder Turbocharged Diesel Engines for Volkswagen and Audi (http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/SAE/vwtdsae.shtml)

Nice read, and good stuff.

But I noticed that it didn't mention a change in block/rod/piston alloy from naturally aspirated to turbocharged anywhere in the paper.

Did I miss it, was it just not mentioned (Seems to me like it would have been?), or did it not really happen as a transition between NA to turbo?

the pdf scanned book that i found has in it that they did used better alloy's for piston rings (more chromium) heat resistant head, and a stronger crankshaft.  can't remember off the top of my head if they first began to use better pistons though...
