Title: 1983 td jetta what is this worth?
Post by: foxracer1 on December 15, 2006, 06:17:41 pm
My uncle and grandfather have an 1983 4dr jetta 1.6 TD. i need a TD and they have been using it to keep the grass from growing in the drvieway fore the past year now since they bought a new car.  :x  I don't know what to offer them that is fair. Dosen't have more than 200,000 miles on it its in fair condition no major rust but has a nasty growth of mold or moss from the trees above it. They also have a complete 1.6TD engine sitting on a stand and will not give me a price for it. My uncle wants to put it in his truck but he just put a new HG in it. Sorry for the long post just needed to vent. They have no need for TDs they drive thier stuff way to slow and factory.

well look at what they're using the car for... you do more damage and lessen the value of a vehicle when you let it sit stationary.  i would deduct some serious cash from that car if its been sitting there for more than a year.  imagine how rusty the motor must be inside...

the moisture that accumulates never evaporates from engine running at full temp, and therefore creates nasty rust formations and can mix with oil to create acid. not cool!

my dad told me of a guy who got a free car thats been sitting for about 20 years.  he started it.. and it fired up real good.  then died after about 5-10 mins.  the oil must have been pure acid and mangled the motor... it was fully seized up. (not to mention the accumulation of rust, and whether or not any animal dare venture inside   ) wasn't diesel, but you get the point.

what kind of truck is he thinking of installing that 1.6td into?  if its anything but a VW, try to con him out of it due to how hard it is
i think a fair price would be around $1000 if it was fresh rebuilt and just sitting around.  going price is around $2400 for a fully rebuilt TD engine with everything included (even turbo I believe... but with a core of course)
