I started to clean up a VW TD IP I bought in Germany,to build a Hillfolk style VW/Cummins pump for a TDI-M conversion.
I just ordered a seal & gasket kit and thought I'd get it ready for teardown by removing all the crud on the outside, when I found this mystery lever on the LDA. It is on the engine block side of the pump.
I'll try to post a pic,although it may take me a few tries as I suck.
Can anyone tell me what this is/does? And...why is it adjusted so it cannot move? (See the 2 adjusting screws?)

It's the idle governor lever. On pumps from about '90? up the idle speed is handled by a seperate lever on the pump. It's linked to the cold advance on non-ac cars to boost the idle when the cold advance is pulled. It's connected to a vacuum dashpot on AC equipped cars, the operation of the vacuum dashpot is controlled by a solenoid and is turned on during below a certain engine temp and also when the AC is being used.

Thank you...I'm not sure I understand what you just said,but I'll let it sink in a bit. Hmmm Idle speed governor......
Anyhow.......This is the 1st TD pump I've ever seen with one of these.
It's not even on any of the exploded views of VE pumps I've saved or printed out.
The cummins pump doesn't have one either.

I'll see if I can clarify... Newer pumps have a completely seperate internal governor spring for controlling idling speed, this spring is attached to the lever in your picture. On earlier pumps the idle governor spring was part of the main internal governor spring capsule which was attached to the throttle lever. The extra lever is nothing to be worried about, you just set your idle RPM by adjusting this lever instead of the main throttle lever like previous diesels.

It needs 2 bolts holding it because VW is too cheap to use locktite.

its an "idle speed boost" or some such nonsense like that i think they call it
its just like the old style cold advance,but a lil different
it has "detents"
the first detent when you pull it out,just advances the timing,like the old style pumps
but the 2nd detent will cause the idle speed to increase like 100rpms
dont mess w/the adjustments
my dad had a 91 and the dealer jacked with it
had to remove the pump to have it recalibrated
hook it up like an old cold advance lever on the dash on an old mk1
that lil part of the lever w/ the hole in it should have a link rod that runs down to where the old cold advance lever was on older style pumps,that piece is missing on yours
you probably could "cheat" and hook up just an old style pump lever on the back of the pump,so the timing just advances,and "dismiss" the idle speed boost
or find those missing link pieces

Its actually supposed to move, the left screw is the normal idle speed adjust and the right screw is the fast idle adjustment. Someone has tightened the 2 stops together to hold it in one place. It has nothing to do with the cold advance, other than the 2 are connected together to provide cold idle boost. Don't let hillfolk scare you :) , jack with it all you want, all you'll change is the idle speed. The pump will still have a "normal" cold advance lever down on the advance piston cover.

I think I get it. Funny thing is, this pump has no cold start lever.
Just a blank cover plate where the advance lever should be.
Same thing on both sides of the pump.

hmmm i wonder what kind of car that pump came from... it basically came with provisions for an idle boost, but no timing advance... and yea the idle speed is locked in position like that, which is ok. if they used loctite on it, they wouldnt be able to adjust idle later down the road :lol:
although i dont think that anyone would really need to adjust idle that badly anyways (well .. mostly anyone :twisted: )

this isnt any help to the buildup ron
but igot a gtech RR for xmas and ive been playin
heres figures from 2 runs that ive done
ive stillgot to dialin the gtech,but i think its getting there
one was a hp run,and the other was a full 1/4 run
if anyone has a gtech,itll explain the differences between a hp run and a 1/4 run
i did my hp run in 4th gear,cause it was raining and i had no traction
hopefully you guys like these numbers(i cut and pasted from an im)
i got a gtech RR for xmas,and ive been doin hp/tq runs
ive got some setting up to do on it
but 2 of my runs so far:
116hp@2700 rpms
229 ft pounds@2600
and the next
138hp@3100
231 ft pounds@3150
the tq curve is SO flat it isnt funny

138 HP ! Wow Blake! That's more than 1HP per Cu. In. Very nice.
Now I really can't wait to get my TDI-M-GTI done.
My daily driver is a '81 2 door NA with the thundering 52 HP!
That's what I'm used to.
I'll be sure to pack a change of shorts when I get mine on the road!
I never played with a G-Tech. Sounds like a fun toy to have.
I had the glass shop out yesterday for a windshield install. Stupid "glue-in" glass on this '84 GTI, otherwise I'd have done it myself.
Got the Cummins head swap finished. I did it myself with parts from R&R.
Gotta do the Gov Mod and install the new mainshaft seal yet.
Then I can begin the install of all things Mechanical on the GTI,ie fab pass side motor mount, install eng/trans,etc etc etc.

I got the mainshaft seal replaced. Machined a "spacer ring" to fit the OD of the 1.6TD pump to the ID of the opening in the IP bracket,out of brass.
This is an ALH engine and I'm using the stock pump bracket. The OD of the Electronic TDI pump was much larger. Also had to machine away that black plastic timing belt cover, on the engine side, but only behind the IP pulley,in a circle 1/16" larger than OD of IP pulley. The back side of the pulley would rub on it otherwise.
I cannot install a cold start lever on the pump anyway,due to using the stock ALH IP bracket. No clearance,so it doesn't matter that there is not one on this pump.
Anyone come up with any info for me on this pump? Very curious.
