i plan on a TDI-m in a pickup and the budget i am on i can not be picky on engine codes. the AHU has the bolt holes for a1 mounts but an ALH does not. Can i drill and tap an ALH block for A1 mounts? will an 020 trans bolt onto either motors?
-
there is a link on here to Mr. Daves install, very detailed, on the VW VORTEX... its the best ALH install i've seen and he did some simple modifications to the mounting on the passenger side to make it all work.
Your right though... AHU/1z have just the regular mounting holes you could use...
Let me know if you need more info...i have info on my thread, or could connect you to his...

that info would be grate
-
an ahu would be easier, then you dont have to mess with making mounts up and stuff
then its a direct drop in
-
will an ahu bolt on to an 020?
-
All 4 cylinder water cooled VW engines will bolt to all VW 4 cylinder water cooled transmissions.
-
I was going to build a balls to the wall idi to race but it sounds like a tdi-m is the way to go

There's a guy selling passenger mounts for a TDI/MKI. I can't remember where I saw it though. i'm sure the Vortex has a link.

Like i said before... the AHU and the 1z are a direct mount bolt in. There are a couple different ways to go about doing it but the important thing itself is that the block has all 4 mounting holes for the engine mount.
There are different ways...on my particular setup, I wanted to use the factory TDI IP mount, serpentine belt system and retain all the items to allow for the self adjusting tensioner to be installed as well as the timing belt backing plate, etc.
I used the MK1 diesel IP mount, but cut it and modified it to be smaller and fit around what I wanted to keep. It took cutting and grinding to get it to work nicely witht he t-belt backing plate...but no issues now that it is in.
Its also more "rigid" than the MK1 gasser style mounts...heavier, and has a "rib" that goes through the middle of it making it all the more stronger...
Another option is the use of the mentioned gasser MK1 mount. but, it has a "raised" portion at the end of it, where it mounts close to the front of the block that supports a piece of the alternator/accessory bracket that wraps about the front of the block and you'd need to address this or make a spacer up to allow it to bolt to the block...
The other option is to do what hillfolk i believe did and run the stock 1.6 t belt setup and accessories... that means, complete MK1 diesel ip mount mount/IP bracket, v-belt, accessories, etc. I believe he also use a 1.6 tensioner with the 1.9 belt (blocks are slightly taller between 1.6 and 1.9...so go for the slightly longer belt to tension properly)
These configurations are for the 1z/AHU motors only...
I believe i put up pics of what I did mounting wise in the thread on my engine build last fall...I'll be updating it soon as well because I have many more additions to the motor coming this year...

Here is the mount I made specifically...very easy, and the serp belt setup is much more smooth and quiet!

For the ALH ... Mr Dave's install is the best I've seen...and most detailed...

Specifically he talks about the mounts here...

ALH motormount looks easy. from what i have read a 1.9idi IP. will get me down the road?

will an ahu bolt on to an 020?
YES
I was going to build a balls to the wall idi to race but it sounds like a tdi-m is the way to go
yea,i agree
ive never seen an idi that is strong as my tdi-m
build a tdi-m
the 1.9 idi dp should be ok,,i used my old 1.6 dp i had made,i just lengthned it
-
the 1.9 idi dp should be ok,,i used my old 1.6 dp i had made,i just lengthned it[/quote]
how did you do that?
-
my dp was made from the u bends you can get at summit
all i did was cut it before the 90 deg bend it made before it goes down the tunnel, and add a piece of pipe like .75 inches long
as far as the pass.side mount/pump bracket
i used the old mk1 diesel pump bracket/motor mount assy
with the mk1 style tensioner+mounting stud
yes use a normal "tdi" timing belt
the tdi automatic style tensioner is the same diameter as the old mk1 tensioner
i am contemplating swapping to a mk1 gas engine style motor mount
then you use the orig tdi pump bracket with extra roller, and the tdi automatic tensioner
for some reason i have a heck of a time getting the tension correct with the old style tensioner
its no fault of the engine,im just kinda dumb sometimes i guess
oh yea,and make sure to get kermas "race 520" nozzles
thatll make 'er run
-
does anyone make nozzles bigger than .216? Does anyone know the # for any that fit?
-
kerma has the biggest ones at the moment I believe...unless I've missed something somewhere...
The Race 520's are larger than .260 I believe...larger than what the VWMS TDI runs... I haven't seen larger than .216's elsewhere though...

supposidly when i got the race 520's they were the "largest" nozzles avalable at the time
they were pricey, but now since the power is great,im not complanin so much
check em out at

yes...def. not for the faint of heart. I can't wait to have mine in and really feel things on the car. Its nutty now...i can only imagine...hmm, now coming up with the $$$ :)
Merry Christmas!
