Title: a rather unpleasant suprise.
Post by: Dr. Diesel on November 26, 2006, 10:21:03 pm
So, work slowly continues on this AAZ passat syncro project. I hauled the G60 lump out (for sale, if anyone's interested) and swung underneath to size up downpipe/cats removal (also for sale.. teehee!)

Here's what was staring back at me:

How about gear clamps and rad hose? Might add some shock absorbing qualities as well...

Seriously though, not terribly hard to fix. I'd cut the end fittings off in a lathe, turn up a couple adaptors from solid to fit into the ends and into a decent size of tubing (1-1/2"?) and weld it up. I have a feeling VW would want big money for a new one...

As pictured, that piece converts quattro into front wheel drive only...the hard way

Any idea what caused it to attempt to do an impression of a candycane? Say abuse, that would at least make it fun :P

maybe id try attempting cutting off the rusty part of the shaft, and getting something like some heavy wall pipe(sch.40?)
and reusing the end flanges and make a new one
but sometimes i try to hillfolk things like that just to see if it would work
it cant really get any worse than it is can it??
you are on your own for balancing though

My experience with a driveshaft shop, over the phone.

DSS: Hello, Bartlett Auto.
Me: Hi, how's it going?
DSS:.......
Me: Err... I Have a broken driveshaft, and I was hoping someone could have a look at it today.
DSS:What's it outta?
Me: It's from an all wheel drive Passat. An earlier one, 1992.
DSS:....................... Is it out of the truck?
Me: (oh boy) ... Yes, it's out of the -- truck.
DSS: Sure, bring it on in.

And it went downhill from there.

Get to the shop, and hand the guy the bag with above pictured twisted end sticking out. The guy notes out loud that it's a small one and asks what it's 'outta', then immediately hands it back and says 'nopecan'tdoit' when I said  VW Passat.
It took about a minute of pestering to get him to even take it out of the bag and look at it. But his mind was clearly already made up.

FRICKIN' machine shop monkeys!!!

I take offense to that "machine shop monkey" bit... :D  If you want to speak to a machine shop with an imagination, PM me. I can fix that right up for minimal money. Now is one of those rare good times, I'm not swamped.

"I aint never seen no Ford Axle like dat der!"

Should have said "thanks for your time" then clubbed him over the head with it.  I hate ignorance as much as anyone else.  :P

clubbing him did pass my mind, but then i'd have nothing left to rebuild!

Bruce, if YOU are a machine shop monkey, than this idiot was a machine shop leech.
