Title: Rad fans don't want to come on properly... tach wont work
Post by: mk2vr6 on November 26, 2006, 02:54:43 pm
So my old alternator just took a big dump.  I replaced it with a brand new one, and the battery stays charged.  The tach likes to go on and off from working to not working now, and the rad fan doesnt seem to like to work.  I was outside after letting the car idle for a bit and i "knocked" on the rad fan motor with my knuckle and the thing came on for a few seconds.  I dont know if it was coincedence or not, but it was on for about 8-9 seconds before it shut off.

Any ideas guys?

test your rad fan switch at the bottom of the radiator, those like to go bad, but it sounds like you might need a new fan motor

Check your connections on the alternater. If the exciter wire or w terminal wire aren't making a perfect connection the tach will act funny. I'd imagine it's your w terminal wire though

The W terminal doesnt seem to get the GREATEST connection but its definitely on there.  Is it worth while to cut it and resolder a new end on it?

That's probably whats causing your tach problems so its up to you if its worth it or not
