Title: too much boost?
Post by: 1slowvw on November 03, 2006, 02:42:51 pm
hey guys, was in pricess auto the other day and noticed a boost guage for 24$ so i bit the bullet and bought one. hooked it up tonight and its reading 15 psi. I have not played with my wastgate or fueling yet. My question is does this seem a bit high to you guys, it seems to me that vw set the boost at around 10psi from the factory but i could be wrong. Anyway just wondering if 15psi is a bit high or if i should just crank my fueling till she smokes and run her.
                                          thanks in advance 1SlowVW

PS: its a 95 golf with a 1.9 AZZ

all I can tell you is that bentely calls for boost between 8.7 and 12 psi for an aaz engine. If princess auto has a boost guage that cheap I am going tommorow

Why would you believe in the accuracy of some guage purchased at Princess (probably surplus)? If you have a concern you need to verify your findings with a guage that may receive calibration from time to time. Where do you find that? Let me know too! I guess my point is, if the car is running okay why F with it?

That gauge is junk,  I broke it the second day of tuning,   but was pushing 22 PSI of boost,  with straight pipe.  The gauge was kinda accurate when I was driving, but after it's beating,  it reads 3 psi of boost at idle....

lol gotta love princess auto

Stupid princess auto, i mean i knew it was going to be junky but really how hard is it to make a boost guage. Oh well anybody know the cheepest place to get a reasonably good one?

oh yea.. dont forget that their gauge probably requires oil to function properly, where a specific boost gauge for auto's will not.  or is it an auto specific gauge?

It's auto specific,  it has 20 psi  boost and 30 Vaccume on the dial

Canadian Tire has them for 8.99, use my discount for that, maybe mount an one of my 12 V leds for a nice effect...

Damn I should just go out and buy a normal gauge..... but this will work for now....

I'm thinking what i will do is but a cheap pool guage just to check, if it reads the same as my Princes Auto one, i will leave the PA one in. If not il take is back and save until i can buy a good guage. Don't get me wrong I am definatly a function over form guy, but i do like to keep my interior looking nice, you know for my lady friends.
