Title: Quick AAZ engine question
Post by: veeman on November 02, 2006, 06:44:20 am
I tried searching the archives on this, but can't find a direct answer...

Can anyone tell me what vehicles / years came with the AAZ engine?  Were they Canadian / European market only?   Seems like most of the posts about them were from Canadian folks..

Which years did the US market get Mk3 TD's?  From what I understand, the  AAZ is a 90hp  IDI engine and not a true TDI, right?   Thanks...  I'm trying to figure something out here...

Canada got the AAZ from '92-95 in the passat and from 93-97 in the jetta/golf. Europe had a bit longer run as it was sold alongside the TDI for a while, they also had a naturally aspirated version (1Y?)

The 1.9TD was never sold in the US, there are no US Mk3 TD's only TDI's from '97 on in the golf/jetta and '96 in the passat.

The AAZ is not a TDI. It is a mechanical indirect injection (prechamber) engine similar to the 1.6TD. In stock form it makes 75HP.

edit - passat/aaz availability corrected

Great!  Thanks for the info.  That's EXACTLY what I was looking for.

I mistyped the title of the thread... I wanted to say Quick AAZ question... anyone know how to change that (for the archives)?

I beleive Canada got this engine as well, but only for industrial use, not automotive

Everyone has access to the industrial versions of the 1.9. The code for the industrial 1.9NA is ADG. The industrial 1.9TD is code ADE. I've seen a generator set and a jacobsen golf course mower with 1.9 power, there are probably other applications.

Actually the 1.9 AAZ first became available in the 92 passat, with an o2a tranny, I know for a fact, I have done two crank repairs on 92 passats.

The first AAZ was in ´91 Passats and Audi 80. It was used in Golfs and Ventos (Jetta) to 12/97.
Passat had 1,6 TDic (RA or SB) and 1,9NA (1Y) before AAZ.

Thanks, guys...  That's the info I was looking for.   Is the crank pulley problem pretty column?  Do all the engines eventually need the repair?

Golf IIIs were available with the 1.9NA in 93 and 94.  The guy that I bought my 95 TD from actually bought one brand new in 93.  He said it was gutless though.

Very common.  I'm sure eventually all engines will require crank repair, however my friend has a build AAZ with the stock pulley and he has 500k kms on it, and he runs it really hard.
