Is getting ahold of Factory Mk1 or Mk2 GTD Intercooler / intake setups in the U.S. Impossible or insanley expensive??
I have seen one in the U.S. thus far... Just wondering if I should just plan on having to fabricate intake / intercooling plumbing?
-
if you find it it will be in europe or somewhere where the GTD was offered. try german ebay and sites like that.
-
I got the cooler and hoses from a dude in England, but its harder to find the plastic bits to hold it all together. when I get round toit, plan is to make shrouds out of cardboard, then 'glass em.
Not much more work to go custom all the way and use a saab900 cooler in the same spot. If your planning on a scoop, then maybe a ford Tbird cooler, they have a wide flange around them to seal under a hood scoop.
I have seen the GTD coolers go cheap on ebay.de, but no-one has ever replied to my question if they are willing to ship to NA.
Hey, guys over in europe? start collecting GTD parts at the wreckers, there is a market for it over here! Charge coolers and related parts, the water cooled turbos, auxiliary water pumps. You find 'em I am sure someone on the board will buy 'em.
hmmm, we're going to jolly ol England inthe spring, wonder if the wife and kids want to skip the tourist stuff and go to the wrecking yards!?

Thanks for the tip, I see some MkII stuff at least on ebay.de currently a couple of complete looking setups even but, nothing shipping to NA, mostly Europe or Germany. I have someone in Holland I can have stuff shipped to.
Cheap MkII Setup (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=270043934780&rd=1&rd=1) <-- DROOL!
LeeG
GOOD Idea!! does seem like they go pretty cheap, a GTD Forum member in Germany could make a few Euros buying complete setups and flipping them to members in the U.S. or maybe make a % on handling the money and the forwarding of the parts. I am sure something could be figured out, it is 2006 after all and we do have the internet now.
or we could setup a GTD Free Trade Zone where we trade in parts that weren't available in the U.S. for parts that were available in Germany and vice versa. Like..... ummm... lemme see.....
I KNOW!!! Westmoreland Mk1 Square headlight Conversions!!

There is no Mk1 factory intercooler setup.
And the Mk2 one.. it's not GTD exclusive either.
-
Again HP, Good Info!! Thanks!
For some reason I thought teh Mk1 GTD's were factory Intercooled.
So basically the intercooler setups of Mk2's regaurdless of engine are the same?
Is the Air box the same as the N/A or non Intercooled cars??
-
I believe the air filter box is the same, yes.
About "GTD engines".. there are no "GTD engines" at all! That's a North American myth!
There are RA/SB engines, JR/MF,.. RA or SB engines feature stock IC (the same IC in every engine), the others do not.
This issues have nothing to do with the car being a GTD or a CL or a GL or whatever...
-
The stock euro intercooler setups aren't really worth it guys. Makes much more sense to make custom charge piping with a good front mount crossflow intercooler. You would likely spend less money this way and it would be signifagntly more effecient.
But if you are going for an OEM theme than I suppose this is what you would want.
-
I have also questioned and explained that in topic about GTD nozzles....
I would agree with 953racer, I have no intercooler and I was challenged to buy stock setup, it would cost me around 100$, but it is not worth it...
-

Performance wise, yes. Bolt on installation no.
Although my bits will be far from bolt on anyway, since I have to make a way to mount the IC and get air to it.

It's a bolt on if you pay someone to fab it :D Honestly though fabbing charge piping and mounting an IC is cheap and easy.
-
Just to add my 2p, I'd do a DIY intercooler setup tbh, as it's probably a darn sight easier, cheaper and more effective!
Mk2 GTDs are difficult to come by in the UK, and good ones are as rare as rocking horse poo. Add to that, that the factory intercooler setup seems slightly strange to me. It's face up under the bonnet, and the air supply to it seems rather limited, indeed, I'm going to be either improving the airflow, or re-locating it in the long run.
Still, if you're after anything specific, I can keep my eye out for you.
Cheers,
Tom

Do you have any data on the relative efficiency og the GTD intercooler? I bought one to go on my mk2 Passat(Quantum). People are saying its not very good because its reflex and not a'through put'. But I've looked at pictures of some of these fancy fabricated i/c s and I find that some of the input chambers cannot be directing the airflow evenly across the cooling fins. Looking at the angled pipework on the GTD; it appears to use all the cooling tubes evenly before cleverly squeezing the air back across the returns.

Hi Mark, I'm afraid I don't have any data relating to how efficient the intercooler is, I'm just going by how the cooling airflow is directed across the surface in the Golf.
The few facts that I'm in possession of are merely to do with the relative hp outputs of the intercooled engine vs. non-intercooled. As it adds 33% (80HP over the stock 60 of the umwelt) I guess VW must have set it up pretty well though.
I just can't resist tinkering :-)
IIRC from my Passat owning days, it should be relatively easy to mount in a similar position to that of the Golf, and get the airflow routed up from somewhere underneath the slam panel.
Cheers,
Tom
-
Not 60hp to 80 but 70hp to 80, TomB :!:
-
All good points better flow would be great but, easy bolt up of stock parts appeals to me for a daily driver though and if it were cheap enough....
$84.67 USD before shipping for a pretty complete looking setup (http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270043934780) I'd take it.
I'll have to keep watching for them.
-
Ziptar, good luck with the hunt!
HP, is that the case? I thought that the standard 1.6 Umwelt TD was 60Hp, that's what GSF and other motor factors seem to think anyway.
Cheers,
Tom
-
Umwelt is the English for the German for the American word for ECO... Thus 60HP is on target
The Intercooler inputs are sleek eh Tom :D
-
Tom, we can say there are three Mk2 turbodiesel engines, all 1.6L. RA/SB (80hp), JR/MF (70hp) and 1V (60hp).
The 80hp ones are the intercooled versions from factory and these replaced the 70hp engines.
-
Cheers for that HP, a little more becomes clear!
Thanks,
Tom.
Mark, if you want any pics of a stock setup, just drop me a PM as I haven't altered anything yet....
-
There is a complete setup for sale on ebay just now!

Think a couple of us UK posters are considering bidding.
I think I will let it pass, much as i want them - January is a tough month financially.
Cheers Bri
-
at the current price, buy it and flip it on here, instant profit, no more financial troubles.
-
Well it went for the right proce that's for sure, I would have bid... Once again though, no shipping to NA :( .
A couple of weeks ago I tried to but one on ebay.de, seller was nice enough. He said my German was horrible (Thanks alot Alta Vista Babel Fish :( ) He said he would ship it to me via DHL for $157.00 which is allot but I was willing at the time. We couldn't figure out how to get the money to him. he didn't take paypal, I couldn't find anywhere that I could get a money order that he was guaranteed he could cash, and my bank wanted $85.00 to do a wire into his account. We both finally decided that I probably shouldn't bid because I was already at ~$250.00 and I hadn't even made a bid yet.
Since then I have found out that bank transfers are free in Europe as long as both banks are in the Euro Zone and the transfer is made in Euros. My nephews Dad lives in Holland and my Nephew spends every summer with him. I have him and his dad now primed and ready to assist with and intercooler purchase if need be. Depending on how large it is my nephew might even check it as baggage on the flight home and be a "Mule".
So I'll keep trying I guess.
-
You guys in England take note of how much Ziptar was willing to pay!
I paid 50 pounds for the cooler and hoses, plus shipping. $250 for the whole unit with shrouds wouldnt have been a problem.
-
Seriously guys, I wouldn't waste the money on that factory stuff, for some of those prices you are well and in some cases completely paying for a properly designed and fabricated front mount IC setup that will actually work good. I just threw a GTD intercooler in the dump 3 days ago... :D
-
I get that the factory cooler is not the greatest and that front mounted is better but, at the same time, I have yet to see a used factory setup go for more than the cheapest aftermarket kit for a MKII that I have been able to find to date. The kits that are available are mostly for VR6s. I am also not looking to set a new land speed record.
My main motivation for wanting one is simplicity. I'll have enough going on swapping a TDI into a gasser as it is. Just to make my life easier and to get the swap over and the car on the road as soon as possible, I want a factory setup I can drop in, button up, and be done.
I don't disagree that a custom setup isn't better. I don't want to fool with it at just this point as I don't have a ton of space and equipment to do the fabrication myself. I don't have the time to do the fabrication myself or to go pawing through wrecking yards to grab different bits and pieces and bodge something up. That being the case I'll be spending $$$ anyway for som, eone's kit or a factory one.
When done the car will be a daily interstate commuter, 90 miles each way in a straight line over flat Florida ground at 70-80 MPH. The intercooler doesn't have to give me +50HP or handle an extra 10lbs of boost.
I just want to get the swap done, once it is and I am driving it. Then maybe I'll decide I want bigger, better, faster, more. For now though I am trying to keep the swap as simple as possible.
What LeeG is true... While $250 is getting to the upper limits what I'd be looking to spend. You guys on the other side of pond, instead of throwing them away and having them in a land fill. Do the environmentally responsible thing and sell it to a North American and get cash in the process. It's the "Green" thing to do.....
Get it.... "Green" as in $$$ (or should I say € € €) Get it!! I crack myself up...
The other draw I think for us over here is we never got them... You guys see them all day long. You can tell us how horrible they are all you want.. Doesn't matter.... They are still special, because we have none they have an extra little mystique that we can neither justify nor explain. Nothing you tell us otherwise is going to replace that. You should take advantage of this, Post them on the classifieds, take our money, smile, and wish us luck.
-
It didnt sell!
If i buy it - who would be interested in it and for how much? can sort out postage to the US / Canada once i've got it and weighed it for international shipping.
-
Well I'm suprised there are no takers. I would, but I am trying to sell the mk2, and the better half might ask questions if I start buying parts for the car I said I'd sell.
935Racer, FMIC's I see for sale go for $200 just for the IC. Then there is the fabrication. Can you sell all the parts to bolt a FMIC on a car for $250, or even double that?
Sure, FMIC is better, but even getting to 90 HP like a GTD is a pretty nice bump from stock.
FWIW: I paid £34.64 to ship the IC and hoses to Canada via DHL Shrouds and stuff would add a bit to that I'm sure. So if it sells for £50, you probably have it at your door in NA for $175. Plus something for MontanaGTD's time. Although I see the vendor has 'ships worldwide' now.
-
Oh I am interested all right if I could get it to my door for $175-$200 total for the parts and shipping I be more than happy to buy MontanaGTD several Pints for his troubles :D
I contacted the seller of that IC setup though and he is quoting me the equivalent of $215 USD just for shipping.
-
Depends on how quick you want it! Got a few quotes from a few online couriers and you are looking at £170-£190 to get it within 3 days - but it can go snail post (by sea) takes about 2 weeks, but could be as cheap as £45.
I'll just need to buy it, parcel it up and get it weighted and put it up for sale! with shipping costs included!
Ziptar - you can have first dibs on it if you want??
-
2 days 7hrs left on the auction!
I'm going to leave it to the last minute then bid (because I get paid on friday!) I'll let you know how I get on!
-
well i would rather get a FMIC setup than that factory setup... how does enough air pass over the IC to cool it properly???? i would expect quite a bit of heat soak, unless you modded the hood of your car with a scoop of some sort... or put a fan to assist airflow over the IC... but i guess any IC is better than none.
i am currently looking into hooking up a water intercooled system. theres an XS charge cooler going for around 120 + 20 for shipping... will cost around $200 when its all said and done. the water pump will probably cost me another 100, and the front mount exchanger will cost another 80 at least... it's not going to be cheap, but i know for a fact that it will perform 300% better than the stock GTD intercooler.
-
This guy put a scoop on the bonnet to allow air through, looks kinda cool.

Sea Snail works for as I don't even have the car yet. Sent you a PM.

I "might" have to add one of those..

Well.. we didn't win that one.... but there will be more... Thanks for trying for me MontanaGTD!!
Something that dawned on me when looking at that auction for the first time after staring at many pictures of Intercooled A2 TD engine compartments.
The elbow on the intake manaifold of the intercooled cars goes to the right (drivers side LHD, passeners RHD) when looking at the engine compartment straight on. The non-IC cars and TDIs go to the left. See engine with intercooler pic, area circled in yellow to get exactly what I mean if that didn't make sense:
I had planned on getting an AAZ intake manifold as part of my TDI-M Swap, I would imagine that if the AAZ was not intercooled then the elbow would curve to the left. Where there AAZ Intercooled cars and, so AAZ D-port intakes with the elbow going to the right exist? Did the 1.6TD IC cars only get such a manifold? If AAZ ones are non existant, I could just get a Non-intercooled AAZ intake and take to to a welding shop. I could have the elbow cut off turned roughly 180 degrees and re-welded easily enough I imagine.
Getting a manifold that doesn't need that would be nice though.
