Yep. Couldn't find what I wanted (turbo diesel MkII golf) so I picked up a 90 GTI with extra body parts, etc. I figure the shell will outlast the engine then I can build what I want. Or more accurately, I can get someone to build me what I want. Which brings me to my questions:
- what are my options?
- what is recommended?
- who should I get to do it in or around Calgary?
- and how much will it cost?
Goals are WVO conversion, longevity, economy and performance. I guess the newest TDI available would be nice but I'm open to a 1.6td as well. It will be a while before I start this but I figure I will get all the info now, start collecting parts then deliver the whole package to a builder when I'm ready.
So what do you think?

The reason why you couldn't find a mk2 golf TD was because VW never made them in North America.
It probably would have been easier for you to start off with a diesel, but it's not that much harder starting with a gas shell.
You probably won't want the newer TDI, you'll need custom mounts. A mk3 TDI will bolt right in

I know.

Sounds good.

Look at what bert (I think) has done, which has installed a 150hp PD engine in an old Mk2 GTI shell after his engine went pop.
Common rail power and economy in a much lighter shell. It'll fly!

actually they did make mk2 golf td's. i saw on in the scrap yard in the summer with 470 000 came with a tranny with a 4.25 ring and pinion.it was pretty sweet and i think it was 91 or 92. I live in hamilton ontario just to let you know that they did :D

probably rare to find one but yea us canadians must have had it. we love our diesel!

Just get yourself a TD engine and I'll hook you up, assuming I've moved enough of my diesel projects out of the garages to get it done.
-
Yes!
Love to check out your current project sometime.

Yeah. I'm sticking with my "running by the end of 2006" statement. I just have to clear the garage of another ornament to allow the wife to park there and I'll be going at about 2 million miles an hour.
