I am looking to replace my old 1.6 n/a  and wondering which of these engines would be the best. I know they both make good power and are fairly easy to get more power out of. The place I am planning on buying the engine from says the 1.9td makes 75hp and 114ft/lbs . I guess my real question is which would be easier to make power with and which would be easier to install. It is going in an 82 rabbit.

The AAZ 1.9 TD would be much easier to install and makes almost as much as a TDI when intercooled and massaged a bit. The tdi-m does not have the right mounts to go in a Mk 1, so it can be a real pain.

An early tdi AHU/1Z has the right mounting holes to run in a MK1.  The M-tdi is better than a 1,9td.  A few days ago it was in the 40's in the am and my m-tdi started right up with no glowplugs...the relay wasn't even in the fusebox....try that with a 1.6 or 1.9 IDI, it won't start.  They're noiser than an IDI though so if you want quiet get a 1.9td.

TDIs get better mileage. They are a lower RPM engine

i had a 1.6td,it was pretty quick
15.79@ 85 .something
never had a 1.9 td,but id take a tdi-m anyday over those other 2 engines
this things such a torque monster
never seen a td that can spin its tires in the rain at 60 to pass someone
and its a useless thing till i get up into 3rd gear,even then,its a handful
best et with the tdi-m is a [email protected]
if i get a td again,yea,ill run it+minor tweak on it,but the tdi-m really owns
i got videos+stuff all over here

Thank you guys. Hey hillfolk'r how hard was it to drop the motor in? What mods have you done and where did you get the motor from? I have watched the vids and that is one awsome rabbit.

dude it bolts right in
mines  a Mk3 engine,its the "same" as all the early stuff we love basically
and the mk4 is the one to avoid,cause that requires mount fabrication+stuff

it probably would have ran fine,just for an as is engine
but i had a bunch of money burning a hole in my pocket so i rebuilt it :lol:
hmm where to start on mods....
custom total seal rings
kerma race 520 nozzles
raceware studs(main+head)
mild porting job,nothin crazy,just cleaning up whats there
nice valvejob(new guides+valves)
lots of little things
12mm td pump built by kevin@ r+r engine&machine akron ohio
clutchnet "red" clutch
other stuff too much to list
including my mistakes it cost me about 5k to build my engine setup
1 mistake was that you dont need to buy a new rear seal carrier cause its 1 piece vulcanized
instead,you get an old style carrier from a junk old 1.6 na "anything" and a 15$ seal
easy+done
but i got ripped off,cause i didnt know yet
so i didnt know they were the same as the old ones+they sold me a new seal/carrier,but the a**holes just sole me a new "old" style carrier/seal setup to the tune of about 95 bucks
oh yea and valves were like 30 a piece too from these folks,then i found them for 22
this place is supposed to have good prices+service,but i sure didnt get any....

so that was a "mistake"
just be careful who you deal with

lol i been thru the ringer on clutches too,so that required further monetary learning too,that i didnt expect

OH YAY  im goin to get my new gearbox tomorrow,i found one in CT
its a ASF code,nice+wide with a 3.67
and i found another 7A!!!!
i was thinkin about puttin the 3.67 from the ASF in the 7A
i was doin some research on this

and with a 4500 redline and a 3.67 with a .71 5th gear,thats good for like 130 mph
