I'll assume that this isn't the original engine if you are asking for mechanical lifters correct?

It's the original engine, I could be wrong but i am positive that it has valve adjustment shims, leading me to believe it is a mechnical adjuster head

VW switched to hydraulic heads on the diesels in 1986.  So if the motor is original it is not a mechanical head.

I will get a photo of a hydraulic head posted a little later, it will show the extra cooling passage (lump) on the front of the head(toward the IP) of a hydraulic head.

On my 83 motor is says directly on it that it is a mechanical head NA, and shows the procedure for changing the shims.

I pulled the head off saturday. Today I pulled apart (I took the head off without taking the intake and exhaust off I figured it was the easiest way to avaoid stripping a bolt, plus this is the first time I have worked on a VW or a diesel for that matter)
You guys were right- after I took the cam shaft off I was able to see that it has hydralic lifers (or pushers in this case)
The reason I am pulling this apart is becasue I had the timing belt slip or or something right after I put it on ( I probably had the timing off to begin with) Anyway the worst thing could have happen did, and as a result, the valves and pistons decided to stop the engine short of turning. The pistons look fine, the valves look okay, but two lifters (that I thought we shims) are in peices.
Any idea where I could get some more?

This head won't work, it's has mechanical lifters.  Notice how this one has a "lump" between injectors 2 & 3.  The lump is an oil return passage.  This is the easy way to tell that it's a mechanical head.

A hydraulic head has two "lumps":  The big one between 2&3 (like a mechanical head) and a smaller one between 1&2.  Look at the head in the lower row on the left in this link.  http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=198828  This is actually a hyrdaulic gas head, but it has the two oil returns like a  hyrdaul Diesel head does.

I would guess the hydraulic heads have 2 because more oil flows through the head/lifters.[/url]

My computer monitor is kind of crappy, but in that ebay auction is the head sitting on it's vavles or is it still attached to the block? I've heard it's possible to bent the vavles doing this unless the cam is removed
