Title: Heat shield help
Post by: 91 ECO on September 19, 2006, 05:17:52 am
I am in the process of replacing my injectors and I have one heat shield that will not come out.  I searched here yesterday and have tried to heat it up with a torch with no luck.  I have also worked on it with a pick several times.  I want to exhaust all other alternatives before trying the compression method.  Any ideas??  How much can I heat it up with a torch before it's a problem?

Thanks,

Mark

Try threading a long lag/screw into the hole enough to get a good hold, hook a pair of visegrip pliers onto it, and tap the gripping end of the pliers with a hammer ie up and away from the engine.
Like a ghetto slide hammer effect.

Tried threading a bolt into the hole in the shield, but my vice grips keep slipping  :? .

If you mean you can't get it to thread into the hole, use something with a coarse thread like a lag or screw as I recommended, not a bolt, and turn it in with the appropriate tool (socket, screwdriver).
If you mean your vise grips are slipping off the end of the screw when you hit it, well dunno what to tell you. Try a different grip right on the screw head, and use genuine Vise Grips, the generic ones are't worth a damn.

Good idea on the lag screw. Why not just crank the engine over? The compression should pop it out just fine.

Got it with a longer lag screw.  Thanks for your help.

Great minds must think alike. I had the same problem on mine and did the same thing: coarse thread screw and yank out. Works like a charm.
