Title: Turbo Problems
Post by: cadmo on September 13, 2006, 07:31:10 pm
I have a 1995 td gulf that droped a valve. So I got the engine replaced at the wreckers I bought it from ( big mistake they turned out to be morons)

Well some how the mechanic said the turbo on the replacement engine    ( a 1994 ) was different and would not work.   The only difference I can see is that its waste gate controls are all internal verses the 95's external arm.  Well the problem is: when the engine droped the valve all the bits went in the turbo and jamed it and the mechanic just didnt check it all and let me drive it home.

What make and model of turbo is the 94 and 95?  They should interchange should they not?

If both turbos turn out to be junk what bigger one can i put on it to accompy a bigger pump?

I believe they are all Garret and KKK Model turbo chargers. Model numbers, i'm not sure on though. Just remember, a smaller turbo spools faster than a larger one.

Interchangeable to a point... if you have a Ko3 and you replace it with a t2 or t3, the downpipe won't bolt up, and vice versa.

-You can modify a k03 downpipe to fit the other turbos (t2, t3 or kkk14 or kkk24)
-If you had a t2, t3 or kkk14 or kkk24, you won't be able use a Ko3 turbo without getting a new downpipe (you won't want to anyway)

last night i found a turbo calculator that was pretty good it recommended a garrett t3 50 trim with a .63 turbine a/r, as a bigger replacement for my screwed turbo.  Is any one running this turbo or have any thoughts ?

For a lightly modded engine I wouldn't go much larger than a T3 .48 A/R. The stock T3's .36 A/R is a pretty good compromise by most accounts. A 45 trim compressor would be adequate, the 50 would be fairly inefficient at the airflows it would see on a 1.9.
