Title: what oil to go with
Post by: Pfhettinga on September 30, 2004, 02:00:46 pm
So it's time for me to do another oil change..... With winter around the corner I was thinking about putting something thinner in my 1.9TD....   What oil do you guys suggest I put in?

Thanks in Advanced,
Peter

What type of oil do you want to use, dino or synthetic?

For dino, some popular oils are Mobil Delvac 1300 (if you can get it anymore) or Shell Rotella. Both are 15W-40, but probably too thick for our winters.

As for synthetic there's:
Mobil Delvac 1 (5W-40)
Amsoil Series 3000 Diesel oil (5W-30)
Amsoil European Car oil (5W-40)
Shell Rotella (5W-40) I believe this is a fake synthetic
Castrol Syntec aka German Castrol (0W30) Says "Made in Germany" on the back label.
Redline (5W40)

There are other oils as well but these are the ones I see most often here in Mississauga. Based on cost and availability I would use German Castrol as it's 0W when cold but a pretty thick 30 weight when warm. It's VW 505.00 rated and you can get it at Walmart or Canadian Tire for about $7/litre. Next on my list would be Delvac 1, but Walmart recently stopped carrying it so it might be hard to find.

Good Luck

Peter

Or you could also go with Esso XD-3 OW40 full synthetic.

Less than 5$ a litre...hard to beat for a full synthetic...      :!:

There is also petro canada duron synthetic 5W40. I find it helps with winter starts and is also less than $5/litre at your local petro canada distributer.
