Title: '97 TD Jetta with 6 km!!
Post by: Chestrockwell on September 08, 2006, 11:53:48 am
Driving my car today watching the odometer approach 300k and waiting for the car to self destruct... but no, instead the odometer returned to 0km and started recording distance as normal from 0. I'm not concerned at all but has anyone else seen this?

All mk3's do this. Its normal. I heard the factory made them do that on purpose, but its just something I read on the 'tex so who knows

Hah!, only 587,000 km to go until my mk2 does that.

Its good to know this about mk3s, It might explain a couple of cars I have seen sell with 'low' km at ~ 140,000.

I googled and found another post on here about it:

And if you want further proof there is even a (boring) video:

Yup, my mk3 jetta has only 5000km on it right now, I figure I'll put another 100000k on it and sell it as a "low miler" :D The word TOTAL disappears from the odo display when they roll over, watch for that if you're shopping...

Funny related story, local shady used car dealer has a Mk3 jetta on his lot, sign in the windshield says "Diesel" and "Low Miles". Naturally, I'm interested. I stop to take a look at the car, odo says 40 some thousand but the interior is trashed, knobs busted, pedals visibly worn, seats and carpet badly worn, etc. I'm thinking somethings fishy here... I look at the door jamb to see the year and low and behold there is an old minute-lube oil change sticker with the mileage on it, "290000km". Low miles indeed. I didn't wait for the salesman to come out. The car did sell quickly, as most diesels do. I certainly hope the buyer got a good deal...

^ I buy based on what I think of the car overall and what the odometer says is only one consideration.  I have seen too many cars on used car lots that just dont seem to measure up to the low miles indicated.  Plus the used car lots always have so many 'low' mileage cars and cars newly registered in the province.  Just makes me suspicious!

I wonder if the guy that wrote the code for the odometer still works for VW?

Probably used to work for some domestic company and figured the cars would never reach 300k

Welllll, my 'other' vehicle is a '95 Chev van with a 350 TBI in it.  500,000 km on it and the engine has never been opened up.

More likely the guy that wrote the code comes from a family that owns lots of used car lots  :D

I can't tell you how many stories I've heard in the last few years about GM V8 and V6 engines getting extraordinary longevity. They currently have the best gas engines on the market, by far - at least for trucks and vans anyway. Their Duramax diesel is a work of art also. - a pure pleasure to drive.
