Title: Oil Pan Baffle/Gasket
Post by: Bludodger on September 02, 2006, 10:43:30 am
PO of my '91 Ecodiesel did a number on the oil pan. Managed to dent the pan about 1/2 in. near the center. So I am in the process of repairing the damage. In the process, I thought it might be a good time to put a metal baffle that was used on later engines (037115220B). https://www.autohausaz.com/secure/PartImages/037115220B.jpg

Question #1: Has anyone used this metal baffle on a 1.6? Is it necesary/useful or worth the trouble or price? Any problems/tricks to installing it? Looks like I need to remove pump or pickup tube to install. Which is easier to remove? There is an O ring between the tube and the oil pump cover... bentley says to replace. Anyone know the demensions on that?

Question #2: Now that I have the old pan off I am wondering if the oil pickup tube might be damaged as well. Should the tube be at the same angle as the oil pump cover? Mine looks to be slightly bent up. Any way to check?

Thanks

Andrew

go with the 1.9 baffle.  Great upgrade.  Can give extra hp up top too :).  Check the metal line for kinks.  Easiest way to see if it is being restricted.  If it is, I wouldn't drive it on the highway, or very far...  The oil pressure might get too low :(

please explain...

Did you take off the oil pump or oil pickup tube to get the 1.9 baffle in place?

Thanks

I got it installed. Doesn't seem like the original baffle (small plastic fin that snaps onto the oil pickup) will fit with the new baffle. Is this correct?

The new baffle will prevent starvation even with hard cornering? or am I missing something?

Thanks

yep.  it prevents starvation, and parasitic losses (even adds hp!).  It prevents oil starvation by not allowing the rotating crankshaft to pick up all the oil and whip it around everywhere inside your motor.

as long as you have it lined up, it should be ok.   Hmmm the original baffle wont fit with the new baffle?

do you need the plastic baffle if you have the oil pan gasket one?

Zooky-
That is what I need to know.

Anyone used the oil pan baffle? What did you do with the old plastic clip on one? Discard? Modify?

I've got one of those steel baffles on my gasser rabbit race car.  I believe we were able to use the plastic stock baffle as well, but if I remember correctly, we had to cut the plastic piece slightly...  Not sure whether the 1.6's are different than the 1.8's in that regard...
