The A1 toilet bowl manifold has a different part number (067-253-031AB) than the A2 part (068-253-031 B).  That said, I've never compared them.  On the gas cars, the manifolds are different because the downpipe positions are different since the A2 must clear the rack / tunnel.

dont  know if this will help, but the turbo exhaust manifold i have for an ABA head fits on a diesel counterflow head....

most vws have the same bolt pattern for the exhaust

I'm not worried about that, only where it meets up with the DP. I'll have my engine pulled soon and will let everyone know. Exhaust manifold bolts scare me

the exhaust manifold is different in relation to where the downpipe outlet is at

i know by trying to put an engine from an A1 rabbit into my a2 GOLF, i had to switch the manifolds

Yes they definitly are, the mk1 exits in the middle where on the mk2 it exits right behind cylinder 3
