Title: TD tranny needed!
Post by: NATEVW on September 24, 2004, 05:54:04 am
Hello all I have an 86 vw rabbit with a 1.6td out of a jetta in it and I am looking for a tranny to go in it I would like to get some thing that is going to get my revs as low as possible I would like to get a tranny out of a 1.6td jetta and make it work I rode in on that would cruise at 70 at like 2500 or so. Any Ideas on waht will work or what I need to keep my eyes open for.

Thanks Nathan

An 86 Rabbit?  Never heard of such a thing.  Anyway, a good tranny would be an AGS (out of an 86 to 90 1.6 diesel) as it is geared for the diesel engine (some of the gasser trannys you will have trouble getting the car going in first because the final drive is not geared for the diesel engine).

3.94 final drive, 3.45 1st, 1.94 2nd, 1.29 3rd, 0.91 4th, 0.75 5th.  3rd is good to about 65km/hr unless you are accelerating.  You can easily do 100km/hr (60mph) in 4th.  5th is the highway cruising gear.  At 70 mph you will be turning around 2600rpm.  Not perfect, but one of the nicer tranny options out there for a 1.6 diesel.  I am currently running an AGS tranny in my 88 Jetta TD and I find it is geared very well for the engine.

The Scirocco guys have a table of trannies here (http://www.scirocco.org/gears/).

whatever one you decide on, remember that the ones that were used on gas VWs are not really suited to diesels because the final drive is different.

I like the 'gas' ACN / ASF for 1.9 or 1.6TD highway cruising. a healthy 1.6 will handle these 'tall' trannies too.  Tired 1.6, or towing is gonna be tough

I live at ~1000ft, so low elevation helps (I'm mostly NA's)

for mountains, a 9A with a swap to .75 5th is really nice (3 gears 40mph - 60mph)
