Title: Source for new oversize pistons
Post by: hamman on August 04, 2023, 04:05:32 pm
I am planning on having my block bored out to the next oversize.  I have found a good machine shop, but am stumped at finding a good set (hopefully KS)of pistons.  Turbo preferred and 76.98mm.

Here's what I've tried so far....

Parts Place - all made in Taiwan
Pelican Parts - KS automotive (not Koldenschmidt)
Bus Depot - Listed but can't get them.

Thanks in advance.

I've got 2 sets I can part with but they are both +1mm.

I do have a set of +1mm 1.6NA as well but someone took a dremel to one of the skirts, looks like started to create the notch for the jet maybe. I would think they would still be perfectly usable if rebalanced.

Thanks so much for your offer.  I really want to stick with the 1st oversize but would take you up if the block demanded more work.  Just yesterday I was able to located the pistons at Brickworks in the UK.  Great price, too.

Looks like "KS Automotive" not Kolbenschmidt...if the photo is the actual piston then writing on the top does not look like OE VW or Kolbenschmidt.

From what I've seen and heard the aftermarket stuff isnt bad. Even Hans pistons are ok. I think someone mentioned that its better to go w name brand rings in lieu of the stuff included but your experience may differ.

I was concerned as well and the guy emailed right back and stated that they only carry Kolbenschmidt or Mahle.  If the branding says KS, then I'm hoping it's the Kolbenschmidt.

I haven't done this type of work before, so my experience isn't worth much. This forum is so good at helping guys like me to learn... and hopefully not screw up our cars too much!

This is the label on the box that arrived today.  Look legit.  I'll get a pic of a piston out later.

They do look good.

What are your plans for the build? Whats the motor going into?

Sorry for the delay.  It's an '84 Rabbit 2 door.  I got it in 2015 with 79k and have decided to add a turbo with a Giles turbo pump for a bit more pep.  Oil cooled and intercooled as well.

I've gotten new sets of oversize Kolbenschmidt pistons from Spareto.

How have you dealt with the black coating on AAZ pistons? It has a thickness and the spec clearances are tight...do you bore to the face of the coating or to the skirt?
