Title: Alternator bracket idea
Post by: firestorm13666 on July 25, 2006, 07:53:48 pm
Well do to the fact there is little to no adjustment in the belts on our engines i had a idea to help this.As of right now my belts have settled in and now the crank/water pump/AC pump belt is to lose.My idea is to take the  toothed tension set up used on the gassers and add it to our bracket.I am thinking of taking both brackets and making one by welding the toothed part onto my bracket. What do you think about this idea. Also where should i place the toothed part so i can get a full rage of adjustments? Thanks

Well, I hate the setup on my car and I have the toothed rack deal.  Its a major PITA.  I imagine special tool #XYZ makes it easy, but without that....

if I was going to modify anything I'd go for a little more travel on the adjustments, get rid of the toothed rack deal and rig up some way to use a prybar for tensioning with one hand while I tightened a bolt into a captured nut with the other.  Same for the PS belt underneath.  Finally I'd make some kind of splash shield under the car to protect the belts so i didnt have to get after them so often.

Dont even get me started on the stealer only slip pulley on my waterpump that set me back 400 clams   :(   That is the single most expensive piece into this car in 200,000km

That seems the simplest solution.

if you have a basic diesel with only alternator and waterpump, you can shim the alternator pulley to be more outward and just use 1 single long belt. thats what i did. works good.

I don't understand what you are planning with the geared adjuster bracket.
You talk about the AC belt being loose but I can't imagine this toothed bracket helping that.
If you use it to adjust the alternator tension are you planning to keep the tensioner pully?
