When changing a starter, how do you remove the bronze bushing in the transmission without beating the crap out of it?

I found a coarse thread bolt and screwed it into the bushing, held the end of the bolt with a pair of channel locks and pounded it out with a hammer.  It came out easy, drove the new one in with a brass drift.
