Hello to everyone!
I own a 1992 Jetta TD (1.6L MF) with 328000km. Due to an unfortunate incident with the injection pump shaft developing some play, the timing belt slipped off and destroyed my cylinder head. So, I had VW (Easthill Autohaus in Walkerton Ontario) rebuild the head and injection pump... So, now, $2717 in the hole later, I have a nice smooth running car.
There's only one curious issue left for me to deal with. They filled the engine with Castrol GTX High Mileage 10w30. WHY!? This is not a 'C' rated oil from what I can find (website documentation). Prior to this rebuild, I was using Quaker State SB Diesel Plus 5w40.
Should I call them and ask them what's up or continue driving? Oh, and they put my next oil change at 12000km!

Hi there ..I worked for Megacycle cams for many yrs......
the boss would NOT warrentty cams in engines using any type of Castrol muti weight oil......... single grade OK ..... the shop has dieselmorons :shock: out back under the tree, drain that stuff and get some Dello or Rotella . your car will thank you by lasting for many yrs ......... My .02c ........ :wink: :

do you think the oil might be for some kind of break in? Better ask them to be sure though...

Call them up and ask them to dump the 10w30 and put the right oil in the car.
They screwed up and may not want to admit it.
If they won't do it, then change it your self.
The 10w30 MIGHT be ok for a couple hundred miles. As soon as it gets enough soot, it will start machining all moving parts in your engine that it comes in contact with. It does not contain the detergents that are in C rated oil, that break up the soot particles and hold them in suspension.

Cool - great cams.
Yeah, back in the day a lot of aftermarket cams went round (lost the lobes) with Castrol oil. Apparently was missing some additive or something that only showed up by wearing out hardweld/reground cams sometimes. I think it is fine now, but I would use something made for a diesel anyway.

You can go to Canadian tire and buy some Rotella T SB 0W40 or to Wallmart and buy some Esso XD3 0W40 (NOT 15W40, NOT THE SAME(MINERAL)), and be back in buisiness.
They are 30 and 25$ for a 4 litres container.
Diesel rated, at least W40 and not Castrol is the key. :D

Thanks Rammstein (good German group!). I changed the oil with Rotella T 5W40 synthetic.
By the way, what's the deal with Castrol, honestly...? VW, BMW, etc etc all recommend it and fill with it at the factory. I think we need to avoid generalizations here.

The Castrol confusion is probably coming from the VW 505 oil spec. The Pump Duse TDi is specified to use only the current VW 505 spec oil, and its only available in the US from Castrol.
Your dealership has probably qotten confused on this and have concluded that all Castrol oil is superior to anything offered by any other vendor.
I'm speculating, but thats my best guess.

Castrol sets the rules as far as API rating goes.
They can put whatever they want in their bottles. :wink:

I use ELF for my Passat TDI and Rotella T SB/Esso XD-3 for my Jetta 1.6D.

I want some ELF oil. I havent seen any of that for about 20 years.
