Title: Gearbox problems "Help"
Post by: mansvw on July 19, 2006, 05:02:22 pm
hi all,

ive got a 1.9td aaz with a mechanical linkage gearbox 020.

the problem im having is putting the car into 5th gear :( , it just doesn't want to go, i physicaly can't move the gear shifter in to 5th gear, feels like im going to break the shifter. all other gears work fine R1234 are okay, the car drive fine in those gear but 5th gear can't be found.

had a look under the bonnet to see if there was a bent linkage or something. all fine under the bonnet.

any one have any idea? has this happened 2 any1 b4?

1) this should probably be in the troubleshooting section
2) check your gear oil... right now!
If you top up your gear oil and it still does this, you may have lost 5th.

Your 5th gear can be swapped without removing the tranny... I've done it 2-3 times now. Let me dig out the tutorial.

Another thought: Have someone shift the car while you watch the selector on the transmission. Take off the plastic linkages, and try putting it in gear manually. Maybe it is an adjustment issue

gear box oil is okay, linkages have been checked, that was one of the first things i did.

what should i be looking for once i open up the gear box, will i see a damaged 5th gear or cracked?

where would i get a ew 5th gear? would the main vw dealer sell repair kits?

Well, it could be that the synchro is shot. But it could also be that the retainer clip on the fork has come loose, allowing it to unscrew. That happenned on my mother's car.

If the gear or synchro is shot, let me know. I have 2 good 0.76 assemblies

Dunno, I'd probably start in the "for sale/wanted" section. That's where I got my 0.71.

I'll have a look for a DIY guide. Yeah, let me know if you want a .76, or even just a synchro for that matter.
