Title: HONESTLY WHY!!!?????????
Post by: SMOKEYDUB on June 11, 2006, 01:52:26 pm
Why dont you have a giles pump on your car yet??? I recieved a built pump and set of rebuilt 155 bar injectors and all i have to say is wow. Giles did his first 12 mm pump for me and i dont think i could ask for anything better. VARY SATISFIED! with a factory pump with the fuel screw turned right up on my car it was only just barely beating 2.2 caveliers   so i patiently waited about a week and through the pump in on the weekend and all i have to say is wow. It has gotta be about 3 times faster then it was before and there is no exhaust smoke under boost.even under no boost and punch it there is only a haze. I only have a 1.6 and i have never felt so much off boost torque (from a 1.6).... listen to me bable like a little school boy.  anyways i just had to vent a little bit cause i am so excited about it.

Umm, because I'm too cheap?

I've considered it, as I could use a little performance boost, but... I have REPAIRS to do first.

I am cheap to but once you get it done and over with its honestly worth it and i think you would get quite a bit more then a little performance boost.

its a fellow member on this board Giles@superiorfuelinjection and i got a 12 mm pump with all of his other tricks that he does.  i would say the 12mm pump is to big for most people but if you have a big turbo then i recommend. He can make you a pump for any application.

so with mine being a stock turbo, but will intercool, and more boost, should i just stay with a 10mm, or will a 12mm work and give me the juice that you got?

you can even use the 9mm setup he puts in a 1.9 camplate and some other mods and would give you more then enough fuel for that

To be fair, I've seen CAN$750 as the number for a 1.6NA pump rebuild. That converts to about USD$673.

Hey Smokeydub...I'm probably buying  a N/A diesel A2 Jetta in a couple of weeks and my only concern with it is the power  (or lack of) issue.  Is your Jetta N/a or turbo? How do you find your acceleration onto highways now as compared to before the pump rebuild...also maintaining highway speed going up steep grades, tailpipe smoke at WOT, and last but not least, the affect of your fuel economy. I would seriously consider getting the pump modded if there is enough of a real world difference......thanks for any info.....

Like enough of a boost to blow a GM8 turbo....  :P

DVST8R....PRECISELY! Red rabbit my car is turbocharged but it once was N/A and i feel your pain from those 52 hp. What i remember was it had to be floored all of the time to do anything. If you use search im not sure if you will be able to find it easily but giles built a fuel pump for his 1.6 N/A rabbit and he g teched it a something like 77 hp which is more then a factory turbo diesel. I think it would be very respectable with 70 ish hp. if its a 1.5 N/A ithink your looking at running like 48 factory hp which is scary

I thought we got all the "how to"-mods on the board.
I'm kind of cheap, but i also just like to do it myself.

We got know how about, plungers sizes, camplates, governermod, LDA and the starwheel for the LDA, i dont know what else you can do on a pump internal.

Dyno your car ASAP. id like to see a real dyno chart. i have built a couple of 1.6 diesels up and im impressed but at the same token I have built a gasser turbo and done cheaply it still kicks diesel ass. i am building another diesel right now and id like to see some dyno numbers from the giles pump before i order one up.
so hook us up with some charts

well i can guarantee i dont have the same setup as you so what good is a dyno chart for you? My car is temporarily out of service do to cooling and turbo problems so im doing a bit of troubleshooting and fixing.

i know u dont have the same setup as i do also. the benefit of the dyno is so that you arent saying my car is wicked fast. you actually have some numbers to back it up. it helps to tune also because u can see where u are gaining and lacking. in the gasser tuning world we dont run cars untill they have been tuned on the dyno. it only makes sense. i just wanna get an idea of what kind of power u are putting out. you can then state what you have into the motor and we can all learn something......

I'm personally in favour of paying Giles the money he asks for his performance pump.  I would be too scared of breaking my pump by opening it, and changing things inside.  Lots of special tools are also required for the job.

Giles is actually not really making a profit by doing the performance rebuilds.  I'd rather just pay someone who knows what they are doing, and who do it good.

I'm saving up to get my pump re-done by Giles

my pump shat on me so i figured for the money i may as well get it rebuilt by the man himself.  I'm not too sure what this'll do to a stock engine though.  I hear he makes them based on what you want and whats done to the motor so it shouldn't be too outta control.  Did all you Giles pump guys install it on an already modded motor or was it a starting point for you?

I'm highly considering one of these monster pumps too. I'm hoping my stock pump will hold out till spring when I'll probably have the $$$ to do it. I can hardly wait that long though. I drove a 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 HD today, and MAN that thing is quick. THAT is how a diesel is supposed to feel.

I've started my pump savings account. I'm 1/10th of the way there

Smokeydub, I hae a 12mm pump in my car too, though mine is a TDI.  It was put together by Redrotors :D  Anyway, my question, what is the max rpm you sustain in your car?  Due to gearing and a fear of blowing my pump up I try not to exceed ~4000rpm sustained which works out to be about 180km/h for me.  Red told me a fun story about driving fast for too long :(

Just spoke with Giles yesterday and he's backed up with pump mods.  Evidently the low sulfur fuel has a bunch of pumps leaking (including mine) and several of us are springing for the performance mod.  If you send him your pump, cut him a little slack on the turn time.

i rev mine to like 5700 very often. and would go further but i am having a valve floating problem

Oh I hear the reving thing, I take mine to the rev limiter al the time too (5100rpm on this thing), but what can/do you sustain yours at (highspeed cruising etc)?  Does giles do something "special" to allow for continuous high rpms with out the pump self destructing?

well i have done some long runs at 160 and once dr.diesel took it to 195 and hung around there for a while. my car has the stock transmission so you could imagine the kind of rpms it was turning.

haha. stock i think 160 is about all a person can do in a td.

well thats all i can do :(

well to be honest if i hold it floored i can get to about 165..

and if the wind is at my back and im going down hill i can get it up to like 170-175'ish.

i need to talk to this giles person. what's his screen name?

i;ve done 105, and 110 would have been at the flick of my foot, but this would have put me at about 4500, and i really didn't like going that fast so i slowed down

trevor i believe your speeds are in miles right?

the ones i mentioned were in kilometers. so i dont want to give the impression that my td going 175mph down hill LOL
Title: HONESTLY WHY!!!?????????

105mph ~ 165kmph

yeah, that would be the real speed with a 70hp TD Mk2. Although I've passed over 180Km/h (speedometer read). Horizontal road.

That's a lower RPM then what I cruise at with my 4S. I think it's around 2500
