Title: 2.5" exhaust 2 glasspacks enough?
Post by: sethyboy85 on June 06, 2006, 03:35:41 pm
I am getting a 2.5" exhaust on my car soon and was wondering if 2 glasspacks would quite the car down enough. right now it has the factory exhaust close to the turbo on my car and was very quite when the exhaust was clamp to the turbo DP going through the factory exhaust to the rear axle where it enlarges to a 2.25 GP and a turn down.

Would a 2.5" exhaust with 2 GP be quieter than a NA with 1 GP on the highway... I still like to hear my car but not drone me too death.

I can tolerate a decent amount of noise I ran my Turbo Daytona around for 1 summer with just a DP on that which ended right below the shifter and was actually quiet except for when you got on it.

most any muffler,or glasspack will "kill" the turbo whisle,
the setup you wanna use will be qwiet, with some sound, try one glass pack at first, but leave a tailpipe you can remove,so you can add a second one (glasspack) if you want it quieter

I have 2" new piping with a resonator and Flowmaster muffler. I can hear my turbo almost as much as my girlfriend's '03 Jetta 1.8 turbo!

Im not worried about the whistle, I have had many glasspacks on turbo cars and even alittle too close and blew the fiberglass out of one on a highway trip . I am mostly concerned with drone on the highway.

1 glasspack gets rid of a lot of drone on the highway, 2 is perfect. One is great for aroung the city, but I like two for highway driving.

In my 81 TD I bought a Thrush "turbo" muffler from the local parts store for $20. I was running a straight 2.5" pipe for a while and it was pretty obnoxious. The exhaust sounds a lot more civilized now. Due to a semi-custom K+N conical airfilter setup I can hear my turbo whine just fine. Even better now that the loudass exhaust is under control.
The gas turbo guys claim FlowMasters actually have a small negative performance effect on turbo gas cars. Flowmasters basically work by dampening "exhaust pulses". After the exhaust has been blended by a turbo or two, there aren't really any of those type pulses anymore. Therefore FlowMasters aren't usually turbo guys' first choice in mufflers anyway.
Nothing against FlowMasters, I have a pair on my other truck and a Mustang and like them just fine.

I ran 1 Trush glasspack on my 3" DP  / 2.5" exhaust after driving without for some weeks, 90% of the turbowhine went away

My next project will include a (permanent) bypass for some good symphony  8)

seems to me having the pipe all the way to the back of the car quiets things as much as most 2.25 mufflers.

On my turbo Caddy, I tried about 5 different muffers with a side exit exhaust just behind the door, and glasspack, gineric turbo, and Flowmaster all sounded damn close to the same.  I love hearing the turbo spin down after shutoff.

It's worth noting that DynoMax/Thrush "Turbo" mufflers are not the same thing as DynoMax/Thrush "glasspack" mufflers. As seen here at Summit Racing  http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=400358+115&Nao=20#rstop
