Welcome! I'm a newbie too... as far as ownership is concerned, but I was witness to TD potential on a trip to Europe in 2003. Now I'm an addict.

Welcome :)

You also need the lid of the LDA with a screw in the middle for better adjustment :)

The 1.9TD has some hidden powers  8)

would any1 know the difference between the AAZ engine and the 1Z?
Title: >Hi All<

the 1Z is a TDI engine, not a TD. TDI's are direct injection whereas the TD is an indirect injection engine that utilizes a prechamber.

i also took a few pis of an audi 1.9 tdi 1Z engine the other day @ a show. from the looks of it the only difference i could see was that the engine position was longitudinal and it had a tdi covert over it?

where is its intercooler? does it even have 1?

That configuration is significantly different than what we got here.
This forum is based in Canada.
The only models that got the 1Z here were the 96-97 Passat & 97 Jetta.

However, if you took the plastic cover off that TDI in your pictures, you'd find the pump electronically controlled, no boost control pin to monkey with or worry about.

so the 1Z is equivalent to the AHU in the uk also, does the 1Z model have an intercooler? would you have any photos?

Sorry no photos but yes, 1Z & AHU are almost identical, 1Z IP is smooth, AHU IP is 'ribbed', for strength or cooling I don't know. That's one of the easiest & only ways I know to tell them apart.
Think our 97 Passat, and 98-early 99 Jetta got the AHU...?

All factory TDI's here are intercooled.

98-99.0 Jettas got AHU.

Another way to tell is dipstick color - IIRC, 1Z is yellow, and AHU is orange. But, that can be changed.

1Z uses a KKK turbo, IIRC, and AHU uses a Garrett turbo. (That's all IIRC. And, it can be changed.)

As far as I know, no B4 passat were sold here with the AHU.

You can find some 1Z in 1998 and 1999 A3 jetta also.

On the above picture, the intercooler pipe goes right across the engine bay, it'as made of plastic.

Look just besides the dipstick, it's not a torsion bar but an intercooler pipe. :D

My 97 Jetta has the 1Z, and its OEM dipstick is orange. I've never seen a yellow one, but I haven't seen a lot of 1Z's either.

Rammstein, if you're talking about the 4 Audi pics, and the hose in the first pic, isn't that rad hose?
Pic 3 of 4 shows the air route fairly clearly, airbox > MAF > turbo intake > turbo outlet > intake manifold.

What yr Audi is that?
