Title: Can pistons from a JX be used in an RA??
Post by: YoSono on May 22, 2006, 12:07:16 am
I need a new set of pistons for my GTD, which is the RA engine code. Anyways, i've been looking on german ebay and have found loads of new ones for a JX engine code (think this is the engine that came in the T3) they seem to be the same diameter, and have the little cutouts for the oil squirters, but i was wanting to make sure if they were the same.

can anyone help with this issue?

cheers
lee.

Lee,

Andy's (ART1234) just picked up a 1.6 passat TD with a blown motor - he's gonna split it for bits and there should be some pistons going spare.

Unfortunately, they are not the same part number.   The pistons in the JX are used in almost every 1.6TD except for the RA.  Not sure what the difference is, and they might actually work but I dont know that information.  Hope that helps.

Bumping an oldie, but does anyone know the actual difference between the RA/SB pistons and the normal 1.6TD pistons?

RA engines out for a short while and were parralleled /superceded by the SB engines. SB pistons have same part number as RA.

Reg might be able to see if the piston crowns are different to standard TD.

I wonder if they are lighter?
At least the SB/RA/JX use the same rings...

Wow, useful post Mark.....  ::)

Does anyone have both pistons at hand and can compare them so that we can get the facts instead of Mark's theories?  :P

Hehe, just saying that since I asked for the difference between the RA/SB pistons and the ones on all the others, it is already a fact that the RA and SB pistons are the same but different from the ones all the other 1.6TD uses. No need for you to state the same thing all over ;) That they have the same piston rings I already knew and that wasn't even the question. Just getting a bit tired of your blue texting all over the place, that's all :P

Alas I didn't see your one-liner mentioning SB for the first time in the thread.
Perhaps you didn't read my post where I said that 'Reginald' had some to hand. I think his are still in blocks though, although I could be wrong.
The facility for writing in blue is provided by the forum. I don't write in black ever since smudging ink when writing lefthanded with a quill at school, and getting punished for it. :o

I'm left handed as well, so know all about the ink smearing!

Did you write weird upside down like with a broken wrist? I just kept the paper straight. :-\

I just changed to a fast drying pen, why make it more complicated? ;)

You mean a biro? The Reverend Cook said biros encourage slovenly behaviour, as he tore out a page of writing for missing out the top line. Couldn't meet a nicer bloke after I left the school though

Research on  pistons gives me the following, with a surprise placing for the CY piston, which ran for 7 years in the Quantum here in the UK and began nearly 9 years before  intercooled stuff...

According to VAG:

068 107 065 BC
is 1V, JR, MF, and JX Turboed and CY mechanical head

068 107 065 AT
is RA, SB, Turbo intercooled and hyraulic CY Turboed!

068 107 065 AQ
is JP, CS and ME

Just seen that in America there was a piston that was 10 thou lower to allow for head reworking. Only available in the rebored versions :o

My ETKA shows 068 107 065 BC for the CY as one would expect ???

CY as in the engine I have in my mk1 GTD

What a mess...Just checking... OK so you have a GTD that dated as to 82/83 ish? Non intercooled? Golfs did use the CY TD  then, and you are correct, used the BC piston :o Then by late 1984  Golfs had the JR.

The CY was unusual in that it survived becoming hydraulic. 1981 to 1986 in the 'mk2 Passat [Quantum] was also 'BC' . It was on turning hyfdraulic, that the piston in CY  became same as RA/SB.

I'll amend  the list thanks. What edition of KATE do you have? I have version 7 and 5.5.  I'd love an earlier  version

It's so full of blanks of the interesting stuff at crossover between mk1 and mk2.

Does anyone have an early Euro 'KATE' [ver 1 , 2  or 3?] out there who could send me a copy?
