Title: Interchangable heads for a 1.6 TD
Post by: mtnsammy on May 21, 2006, 05:01:47 pm
HELP

I have cracked or blown another head gasket on my 1.6 TD. If it is my head I need to find a better head to use. Warranties are not good enough when I am dishing out almost $75 each time I swap out the head. I have even tried three different head shops. Each one had it's own faults.

Anyone know if the 1.9 heads match up to a 1.6 (1986) and if they are available new?? I would rather buy a new head or at least one that is less likely to have been welded several times. This motor is killing me with the cracked heads and bad gaskets. Way too much money lost and time fixing it. At least this time I had all the right gages to keep any serious damage from happening. I never made it far from my driveway before it got hot. I still have over 500 pounds compression and it runs real smooth starting on first try each time. At least most of the motor is good.

I believe a 1.9L head won't suit very well  :!:
Don't even know if anyone has tried.

yea.. cold starting will suck with the 1.9 head.  You would need to coat the innards of the motor with some heat reflecting layers in order for it to at least be useable.

Are you using the 1.6 gasket?  I am going to change my gasket soon and from what I've read over in the IDI forum the 1.9 gasket will last better.

Yes from what everyone says the 1.9 metal head gasket is much better than stock 1.6 hg.  It's just common sense actually.  Soft metal is the best gasket you can get.  It squishes nice and tight and expands a bit making it that much better :)

So, btw, any actual downsides to the AAZ headgasket on a 1.6L?
Bit lower compression, right?! How much does that affect the motor?

Ok so what is the part number for the 1.9 gasket? I am game since I have gone thru too many gasket and head bolt sets. How about non stretch bolts too?? I am now paying $20 for the head gasket (06810338AG) $15 for the head bolts and $25 for the intake exhaust gasket set.

http://www.autohausaz.com/index.html

They seem to have the parts everytime and it is much less than any of my local shops.

i dont think the 1.9 hg lowers compression noticeably, if at all.

I found an AAZ gasket with the following part numbers. Is this what I want??
028103383BP  1 hole
028103383BQ  2 hole
028103383BR   3 hole

Do I still use the same head bolts??

My supplier told me that the 3 hole 028-103-383BD is updated to 028-103-383BK.  Yes it's supposed to be a direct fit use the same bolts, (but not more than once).

I ordered the parts. Autohauz still is using the BR ending but it is for the AAZ motor. Maybe it is just their part number system??? I'll check the holes and lineups with both the motor and old gasket.

OK I have the metal head gasket. Are the torque specs the same??

mtnsammy,
Before you put another head on check the deck surface of the block for any warpage or low spots. Put some grease or vaseline on the top corners of the piston tops where they meet the cylinder walls to catch any grit, then wrap a short piece of 2X4 with at least 220 grit sand paper and evenly make a few strokes across the surface. Any low spots will be readily apparent.

Good advise. I have a metal block machined for that very purpose. I used to work in a ship yard and I still have all my lapping tools for fine surfaces. A little blueing compound tells all. I have no faith in any machine shop near me any more and take no chances. I relly think I got a bad gasket but I will check everything out first.
