Rolled over a curb/bump driver side. Engine light comes on and engine is not responding or is bogging down. RPMs slowly come up to ~3000 then she takes off. Hade her scoped and the computer says MAF malfunction and EGR. Plus they recommend cleaning out the carbon build up etc.......$610.00 is the quote. Any tips, suggestions or fixes would be much appreciated.

Tell the dealer to stick it, and spend $600 on a mechanical pump?

Spend $610 on stuff to diagnose it. $250 for a VAG-Com cable and software, $75 for a new EGR solenoid (Hell, you can have mine for $50). Get a new MAF - $75.
So, for $500, you've now got the tools to diagnose your car's problems and a couple new parts.
Then pull the intake manifold and clean it out yourself. $1.00 for the gasket, and $25 for brand new bolts if you need them.

The carbon frequently extends down into the ports and can sometimes require removal of the head to do a thorough job.

What confuses me is this: Why after incurring a substantial g-force does that create this problem? is it a harness thing, hose or elec. short.
Is it common for the EGR to also fail in conjunction with the MAF? What's the mystery cleaner for the carbon build up in ports? Anyone have pdf files on how to go about doing this? First time for me to go exploring under the hood of this trusty steed. Things have change since my '82 Rabbit.

Where are you getting a MAF and an EGR for $75 each?? So far the best I found was $170 and $200 respectively!! :x

I'm assuming it's a MKIV (I didn't get a response), look on TDIclub and do a search for Roseland. Their site is crap, but people say he's reliable. Also, I believe Impex has the MAF's for fairly cheap too. Just get the replacement MAF, not the housing with it.

i posted in subject line the year.
It's a 2002 Golf GLS TDI w/58k miles.
Monsooon sound system in which AM stations no longer work????
Center armrest hinge is broke.
Rear Hatch unlocks sometimes with the FOB.
Replaced burnout tailights 3-4 times a year.
other than that its mechanically sound except for this MAF issue.

OK. I'll lookup what I can for you. For the bad lights and crazy connections, pickup some silicone dielectric compound as per "cage"'s thread on TDIClub. Tons of people report better performance and a lot less of the gremlins in the system.

Thanks for all the info.
I just read a bunch of the threads on the maf silicone connector debate, and seeing as all this crap started immediately after i hit that bump, it is possible i jarred something loose. and if so how long is too long to be driving this thing in this condition?

disconnected the harness from the maf. Car runs normal, now 'bogging' down or hesitation. Obvious answer is that the maf needs a good cleaning or replacing.
