Title: Did I buy the right part??? Injector heat sheilds
Post by: masterbeavis on May 03, 2006, 09:04:11 pm
I have an 81 rabbit p/u(diesel), build date 02/81.  I went to the stealership today, trying to buy the injector heat shields.  The computer showed the part as not being available, so the parts guy tried an '84.  The part showed up not as a heat shield, but as a washer.  The VW part number is 068-130-219.  Will this part work, or is it interchangeable, or did I just waste my money??

The part number is correct. The heat shields look a lot like washers, but have some fine detail machined into them.

The first time I ever looked for them I was told they were called "crush washers", it was only here on this forum that i heard them called "heat shields".

I'm sure you already know this, but make SURE you install them in the correct orientation.

As for heat shields vs crush washers, the soft copper alloy that TDI style 'washers' are made from makes them more of a crush washer.

In their computer it called them heat sheilds under '81, and under '84 they were listed as sealing washers.  In the VW service manual (79-81 jetta/rabbit) it also called them heat shields.  I picked them up on friday, they were in fact the right part.  Now all I have to do is figure out how to get one of the old ones out, it was caked in carbon :((

Moved to general.  IDI engine is for performance enhancement discussion only.

That would make sense.  I got that info off of the TDIclub website.  Should've known better.
