golfs up until 1999 (AFAIK) were all IDIs. TDIs started after that. good luck in the hunt.

98 was the first year for tdi's in the golfs.

There aren't any OEM A3 IZ/AHU Golf TDI's in North America.
Well, actually, there were rumours of a few ie<10, but even if true, good luck ever finding/seeing one.
A3 Golfs are AAZ IDI.
A4 Golfs (99.5 & newer) got ALH TDI's.

The beetle got the A4 ALH engine in 98, a year sooner than the Golf & Jetta because it used the A4 platform right from inception.
