Post by: 91turboeco on April 23, 2006, 07:07:59 pm
found a short block turbo diesel in a guy backyard told me he sale it to my for $100. one thing i notice it that the pistions back and forth in the bore about 1/16 to a 1/8 in. is that normal? or will it need rings?

there has to be some clearance there for expansion and what not.1*16 doesnt seem bad. chack if it turns over and look at ridges on the top of the cylinder wall if they are big ridges it will need to be bored and new pistons.

walls smooth as glass but he said the reason they stop running it was it was not holding compression even after a new headgasket and the block not warped. so they took the head off turbo and all "it was good" and put it on a 89 n/a

that why i'm thinking rings

That thing is more likely than not going to need rebored and new piston-rings installed.

Usually,if you can rock the pistons a noticeable amount, then it will need to be bored oversize.

either way 100 for a true turbo short block isnt bad, if it has the squirters. here in michigan the parts place wanted like 300 for an unbored block with squirters, you can imagine what i told them when my machineshop machined squirters for 40 bucks

not to rip stuff up, but i havent had very good luck with parts place in the last few years,, i dont know how many times ive recieved wrong parts.example: i needed a fuel filter for 81 diesel,an oil filter for a late tdi,,,lets say,,they send a fuel filter for a tdi,and an oil filter for an 81,totally bassackwards,,i dont know whats goin on up there, and that isnt the only time this has happened,,1 time oops,2 times, starts gettin funny,3 times wtf?? 4 times im a fool, and i came back for  a few more after that too!!!!!so who is the real dummy??  yea i know,,,anyone else get these problems??if its just me,than all i can say is place orders individually,if you order parts for multiple cars at once,,,,and i got a windshield gasket for my rabbit from them,,looked like crap, not even an oem style, they must source stuff now in china,,,, i aughta dig up that gasket, and snap pics,,yea it wasnt cheap either,,,alsoseems like if i get cv boots from them, they onlylast about 2 years?? not a good idea to use nos stuff for rubber parts, hah

hillfolk'r,

I agree with the parts place being pretty dumb and mixing parts up, i have had it happen to me as well.

I AVOID the Parts place as much as i can but for hard to get stuff i cannot find anywhere else, its not just you with bad expirience I have had it to with the wrong stuff and when I take it there they say well its not our fault.
so I tell them that its not my fault that they or their supplier screwed up the parts or lack there of or wrong parts

end rant
