Title: Cooling Fan stays ON and will NOT shut off......??
Post by: Katmandu on April 21, 2006, 11:08:36 am
I just replaced the radiator in my 81 Diesel Rabbit and now the Cooling Fan on my stays running and will NOT shut off. It stays running LONG after what a "normal" cool down period would take.

I finally pulled the plug (on back of the fan) after it was running for almost (10) minutes ??

What do I need to check ??

When you installed the new radiator, did you replace the temperature switch as well?  Bleed your cooling system?

replace that sensor that you unplugged. $30 ish (Cdn)with new seal (metal crush washer).  Plug back in.  Bob's your uncle!  You should probably put in a new thermostat and o ring while your doing it.  Also hoses would be wise.
I say this 'cause I did my rad ...then I had to do hoses...then I had to do sensor...then I had to to Thermsat.  I could have saved a lot of time, money and cursing if I had odne it all at the same time.
Good luck
Out.

It was the fan I unplugged. Not a sensor.

What sensor controls the fan and where is it located ??

When you are standing in front of the car it is on the right side radiator tank. :)
