Up for sale is a mechanical lifter 1.6TD short block. The engine blew the headgasket and on disassembly I found that the head was cracked on the combustion face and so not usable. The rough condition of the exterior and interior of the vehicle have inspired a part out rather than head replacement. The short block was completely rebuilt 50,000 miles ago. The rebuild included being bored to the first oversize and fitted with new Kolbenschmidt pistons, all new bearings (including intermediate shaft, oil pump shaft bushing, mains and rods). The pistons and cylinders look fine. Still plenty of cross-hatching visible, no palpable ridge at the top of the cylinders, etc... Put another head on it and rock on. Price is firm at $350 plus shipping from 86001. That's less than the cost of the pistons alone.

This is a great deal from one of best members of the community.
I might be interested -- as I've got some parts left over from a messed up AAZ block with melted pistons, and am driving an AAZ vanagon and I'm wondering about the pistons rings etc.
-
Thanks for the post.
AAZ pistons/rings are not the same diameter as 1.6TD. Rods are a different length. Crank is different as well. Despite the significant similarity between the engines, not much interchanges.
-
Thanks for the reply. I was for some reason thinking AAZ bore diameter is the same as the 1.6td and that the pistons were the same, though not the rods and crank.
I've been putting off rehabbing my melted piston motor, largely because pistons are so damn expensive. I might end up with used pistons, as much as that sucks.
Anyway this is a good deal and should make someone happy. Coming from you I'll bet this motor has a lot of life left.

It is a CY code mechanical lifter turbo block (with piston cooling oil jets fitted). 12mm head bolts (as all the turbo blocks are). Pistons are 76.98mm Kolbenschmidt. No ridge at the top of the cylinders. Decent cross-hatching visible. It comes with the intermediate shaft, longitudinal oil pan, and oil pump. It ran really well prior to the head gasket going. Great deal on this short block.
Just curious do know what may cause the ridge on the top of a cylinder wall? I rebuilt my first engine (aaz) 6 years ago and it barely last 100k due to a severe ridge at the top of only the #4 cylinder. Good luck with selling the short block.

I've always assumed it was just normal wear from the area the ring sweeps. Odd to have just one cylinder with notably more wear than the others, though. I imagine a defective ring, stuck ring, or even an overly loose piston might exacerbate it.
-
Does it come with the pan?

or....an injector with a bad prostate which weeps. Would need to see the rest of the bore and skirts.

I'm glad you asked because it made me realize that I had misspoke previously. It has the longitudinal pan on it.
-
Thinking about it, I will let you know if I need it or not.

I thought you get a block short block from yerr goodist buddy?
hahahhahaa
Next time.....we install main bearings facing right WAY, Comrade............

Hey. I have a 1.6 NA motor that I am planning on doing a eco-diesel type conversion to. I am gathering up parts and was looking for an AAZ K03 turbo and saw this ad. I think I know you from the Samba. Would my head bolt right to this? iIt would be testing my abilities but hey. That would let me also increase fueling right? Thanks
-
If your current engine is a 1.6 with solid lifters and 12mm head bolts, your head will bolt on. This block has the piston cooling oil jets so it is able to better handle increased fueling than a non-turbo block.
-
Yes on 12mm bolts. Not sure about lifters, I suspect they are hydraulic though from talking to guy who helped rebuild motor. Damn.

The block will have a corresponding hump between #1 and #2 if it is hydraulic.
-
Ok, I'm coming from like dead head VW enthusiast land. Trying to learn about the mechanical side now. My head has the hump between 1 and 2 so oh well. Thanks for patience.

Do you still have this for sale? I may be interested in it, as I may be buying a complete 1.6TD Eco core engine with high miles, may as well store it away as a spare for another 200,000mi and run a semi-fresh bottom end.
I am still deciding on hopped up 1.6TD IDI vs a more mild mTDI AHU build, but was curious if you still had this.
Thanks,
Chuck in Columbus, Ohio.

Nope, it's gone. Thanks for asking, though.
