Title: Side exhaust
Post by: mnoll406 on April 14, 2006, 12:50:14 am
I was thinking of running the exhaust out the rear drivers side with a super trap muffler. Anyone try anything like this and how did work/sound?

I have done a few side exit exhausts.  On an NA engine, unless you have a couple mufflers in the system, it can be obnoxiously loud.  And the Supertrapp is a super-restrictive muffler.  Way more restrictive than you want on a turbo, especially.

yah,,superplugged,,,,,lot of folks dont know that dieselmufflers are different than gas mufflers,so soot doesnt plug them up,,,,,,had a diesel generator at work  last week,,ran like crap, looked underneath,,dude said heput new exhaust on it a few months ago,,,,got an auto muffler at autozone,,well i uncorked it,,ran great,,,lotsa chunks of carbon in it!!!we put on a glasspack, cause it was turbo,,quiet, and no clogging,,,,

I say go out the side.  If you're turboed then run a straight pipe.  Here is a pick of a friends.  It sounds great, not any louder than mine with a glass pack.  However, he said on the highway at the right rpm it can create a monotonous sound that can get your ears kind of ringing.  Not good.  But it is at a specific rpm.  oh yeah , this exits in front of the rear wheel just behind the drivers door.  It's a 2 door.

Link doesn't work. That is what I was planning, but I drive 4000 miles a month for work. I'm not TD yet still NA. That is why I was thinking muffler. What is a good diesel muffler? I would like a canister that would fit in the muffler channel, and do a side exit. Driving 4k a month I'm not up for ringing ears. Would like something that is adequate for NA, but optimised for TD. Will be going with 2.5" tubing.

I'm not sure what muffler is good for a NA.  However, I did repair my link and added one to all of Rodney's rabbit project pics.  Not trying to hijack here.

Yeah na diesel with no mufflers are WAY loud, turbos really help make it quieter, I sometimes add glass packs other times just straight pipe all the way back. For cars equipped originally with a cat, someone I know puts the glass pack where the cat was *cough* and than welds a cat heat shield to it so that the people at aircare think it still has a cat *cough cough*
