Title: aaz Front Main Seal
Post by: Spokerider on February 02, 2017, 01:23:05 pm
Going to be pinning the aaz crank sprocket to crank nose soon. Thinking, while It's apart, I may do the front main seal too. How hard is it to replace the seal, just the seal and not the whole seal housing with the engine still in the car? 1995 Golf.

 Thanks.

Might as well just do the housing gasket and the seal at the same time. Its an extra 5 bolts, maybe an extra 10 minutes of your time and will give you piece of mind.

I think that means dropping the oil pan.......... thus me wanting to only change the seal.

You dont need to drop the pan, you just need to remove the 3 bolts under the seal housing, and the 3 or 4 bolts holding the housing onto the block, then pry it off with a pry bar or screw driver. They make it really easy for you, the housing even has some pry points built into it.

Good to know.
I did this on my aaz years ago when it was out of the car, but [ obviously ] don't remember how the procedure went.
