Title: Aab in a mk2?

Hey guys, I recently stumbled upon a guy willing to trade an aab 2.4 td 5 cylinder diesel for some yard work haha. I've been trying to find info about this motor but there's hardly any information on it. Am I right assuming it's an aaz with one extra cylinder? It would be pretty cool to try and swap this into my mk2. I realize I would probably have to notch the frame to fit it width wise but I'm hoping it would bolt to a mk2 trans. Maybe if it's not to much wider I could widen one Axle and shorten the other and shift the whole things to the side. Anybody know anything about this motor?

Don't those fit lengthwise in the engine bay?

The 5 cylinders in Audi's did but in the eurovan they are transverse, they also came with vr6s

The 5-cyl engines have a different bolt pattern than the 4-cyl.  The Mk2 trans does not have the bolt pattern for the 5-cylinder engine.

Oh that's to bad, do you know what trans the use? I've found some threads about people swapping in aaz's instead of the gas eurovan but I guess they use a different trans that  the diesel.

it might be possible, people swap the newer 2.5l 5 cylinder in to mk2 and mk3 cars, but i know the bellhousing is different from a 4 cylinder, and i don't know if the new 2.5 has the same bolt pattern as the old 5 cylinders.  the first 2.5l swap in to a mk1 used an 020, but something was modded with the bell housing

looks like the newer vw 2.5 has a 5 cylinder bolt pattern from what i found online, still it could be possible with an adapter plate and lots of custom working haha.  probably have to figure out a different oil pump and pan though to put it in to a transverse bay

I'm positive the motor is already transverse in the eurovan, I wonder how much wider it is though

The eurovan trans has the bell housing bolt pattern for BOTH 4-cyl and 5-cyl.  I do not believe a eurovan trans will fit into a mk2 without a lot of custom work. 

IMO, trying to fit that engine into a Mk2 would be a lot of Buck for very little Bang.  You'd be better off selling it and purchasing an AHU for a bolt-in install that actually fit in the engine compartment and at the same time gave you better performance and better fuel economy.

So the trans bolts to both but the motor bolts to only a 5 cylinder trans? I'm not really looking for the best motor I cam use, just something fun to try out. I already have a compound turbo aaz in there, I just thought 5 cylinders might be fun. I was hoping it would bolt to my built 010 but I guess it wouldn't.

actually the eurovan 5 cylinder transmissions look an awful lot like an 02a, you may be able to do some swapping of output flanges and shift towers and make it work like that.

Is the part where the clutch bolts to the crank the same on 4/5/6 cylinder engines?
